Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I believe that here at DoodleKisses most of us support responsible breeding and rescue.  There have been posts both here and other forums by people not adhering to responsible breeding standards asking questions or advising of a litter.  They then get offended when they are questioned or told that there are those of us that are offended by their actions.

Please let us all take a stand to only to support responsible breeding and rescue!!!!

Thanks for clarrifying, Karen. Now all the responses make perfect sense. I just recalled a woman who was fawning over Cocoa telling me that she wanted to get a labradoodle so she could breed them. I asked her how she would do it (she lives in an apartment!) and she said she could covert her balcony into a puppy pen. She claimed that if she sold 50 puppies a year she could quit her job. Scary! I'm sure that she wouldn't try to articulate her plan on a breeders' forum!

I agree- we should support responsible breeders and rescues. I think rescue is wonderful, but I felt that my ability to incorporate an adult dog who may have his own issues into a family with two 4 years olds too intimidating. The last thing I would want to do is take one of these precious dogs into my home and need to rehome him again because he was stressed from the activity and noise created by young children.
Yes, I personally think that for many people, a rescue dog is not the right choice. And I also wish people would stop advising others to adopt because they can't afford to buy a puppy from a breeder...rescue dogs are not the canine equivalent of a used car.
I'm sorry that so many people got the idea that this discussion was about adopting vs purchasing, when it's really about supporting both responsible breeders and rescues, but NOT the type of person you described above. The point is that ALL of us who claim to care about these dogs should not encourage this kind of person, especially here in our forums.
Responsible breeders are friends to rescue, and they help keep dogs from being homeless, too. Puppies purchased from the breeders who have responded to this discussion and many others here on DK will never end up in a shelter or rescue...because if at any time the owner cannot keep the dog, it must be returned to the breeder. This in itself is so important. I recently had a wonderful foster doodle whose owner could not keep her for financial reasons. She was going to turn her in to a shelter, but was fortunately given my name and contacted me instead. The doodle could have easily ended up at the county shelter, and at best would have been adopted out to the first person who came along. Instead, she is now living with another DK member in a wonderful home. Had she been purchased from a responsible breeder, she would never have been at risk in the first place. This is another point that I hope people will consider before they encourage anyone and her brother to go into the breeding business.
I would like to believe-that those of us who happened to fall in love with a rescue puppy mill animal-and come looking for support at a site specifically geered toward doodle owners would then be welcomed....this feels a little like being asked for political affiliation before being welcomed. So, the site is apparently not for me. Which saddens me tremedously. I love the breed-but also wouldn't trade my Sadie for any other doodle regardless of where she came from. If this applied to kids, what would we say to the kids already born in horror? Sorry-I can't help you because helping you means...what?
This site is totally for you. I love it here. I have had rescues and rehomes all my life until my doodle Neely 1 yr old. YOU can have any kind of doodle and be very entertained and educated on the site. Its easy to listen to the negatives that are out there but it isn't worth shutting out all the fun and friends you'll make here daily as well. I doubt that if a pole was done on all the members there would be that many that actually got their doodles from respectable breeders. The majority would be from unscrupulous breeders or rescues or just because we were misinformed buyers. I haven't met a pet yet I haven't liked, people...ah not so much ;)
I agree! A lot of us here didn't get our doodles from the best source because we weren't as informed as we could have been. I purchased Darwin from a woman close to where I live who just "wanted to see what would happen" Since I have joined DK I have learned SO much about responsible breeding, and about doodles themselves. If I ever get another doode, or any dog for that matter, I will make a better choice. That doesn't mean I love Darwin any less though. For the most part, we are a very welcoming group and I'm glad you joined!
I was fortunate to buy my dogs from a very reputable breeder, but that was really luck! I knew nothing about BYBs, except that I believe all pets should be fixed, so I didn't look at ads in the paper. Now I know so much more, all learned here at DK. So, yes, I think it's a site for anyone and everyone. I think maybe it's a case of the more you know, the more you know you don't know! :-)
Thank-you!
LGG- I am not sure where you are getting the idea that you or any other doodle owners are not welcomed here or that anyone here wants to know where your doodle came from before you will be welcomed. Many of us who have posted our feelings here have rescued puppy mill dogs- myself included. We are speaking out against would be backyard breeders who come here asking us what kinds of dogs they should breed their untested pets to and what they should charge for the puppies. Do you think we should help them do that?
LGG, sit. Stay.

My girl is a rescue, too. This site is a wonderful source for all, regardless of the origin of your dog.
Thanks Patty! I will sit and stay. I love that~
I have a dog I got as a puppy from a rescue organization. I have an English Springer Spaniel we purchased from (I now know) a backyard breeder. They "thought" they wanted to get into breeding! Wouldn't this site have helped them learn about health testing for example. When we impulsively decided to get a doodle, I KNEW NOTHING. We lucked out getting a dog from excellent stock - lucky us. After I got my doodle, I joined dk and learned lots more about puppy mill deceit, irresponsible breeders, health testing etc. Mostly I feel welcome here. Sometimes I feel stupid. Sometimes I am offended. Sometimes I just stop following a discussion because I figure I will get my head chopped for making an unpopular comment. BUT MY POINT IS THAT I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT DOGS, NUTRITION, GROOMING, SOCIALIZATION (of dogs),TRAINING. I feel that some of my comments are thought provoking, some are silly. I hoped that I have helped other members. I don't care where you got your doodle or what generation it is - you wanted that dog. Although I feel personally that all pets should be neutered, I think breeding your dog isn't a sin. BUT, if you want to breed it, I hope that you will pay attention to what you might learn here before proceeding. AND!!! I have become so much more technologically savve all in the name of fun and entertainment. :))
Nancy, stupid--never! And who could offend you. Tell us, we'll get'em. I really do feel we should express our opinions openly, popular or not. But sometimes I'm not up for the hassle either.
