Is it common or even normal for a doodles tail to curl up and over it's back(like a Husky or American Eskimo) Our new Goldendoodle has this tail that is always curled up....the tip touches her back most of the time. I posted a pic so you could kinda see what I'm talking about, I'd love to know if anyone else has one like this!?!? (sorry 'bout the pics...she doesn't stay still very long ~lol~)
It's definitely the poodle part of them. Barney's tail curves when he's prancing around, and then falls to a semi sabre retriever type tail. Love the curl on your doodle.

Cute pics, our Kona lifts that tail up and over when she gets excited. When she was a puppy it was up more than down. Now she let's it relax at little more into the lab position, especially when she is stalking her brother.
It's a poodle trait and it will usually straighten out a bit with time. I think their charming. :o) In an Australian Labradoodle it is something that is bred away from, but is really just a preference, there are no health benefits of either. If you let the hair grow at the tip, it will "bloom out" like a pig tail on the top of a little girls head. It's quite adorable, IMO. =o)
As long as I bred I will never dock a doodle tail. Once I was in my vet's office when a vet tech asked me to come talk to the new doodle breeder who was in the office to dock tails! I was very kind, but saved a litter of 10 that day from loosing their darling tails. The breeder was nice but just didn't know what to do, so figured she'd dock since they were F1b's and more poodle than lab. Sooo glad I just happened to be there.
As Adina mentioned, the tail is called a "teapot" tail. I once asked Beverley Manners, one of the co-founders of the ALD, why she did not make the teapot tail part of the breed standard. She said she didn't because she personally did not like the look. I personally do like the look. So, I guess it is just a matter of preference, nothing to do with health or poor breeding.
Sunny's tail curls also (F1b) but the interesting this is that her coat is extremely curly but the hair on her curly tail is as straight as an arrow. Go figure!
I have two doodles, one with a teapot tail that's always wagging. The other has a hybrid - a skewed saber/teapot - looks like it was slammed in a door (though it never was) as it goes off to one side more than the other - that one wags all the time too!
that's funny...our F1b is the one with the teapot tail and it seems as though this is more common in the F1b, our older goldendoodle is a standard and he didn't have the curl. Smoochy's tail actually does curl around even more then the photo shows...it's just hard to get a pic because she NEVER stops moving! lol
thanks for all the feedback:)
The end of Boomer's tail is almost a complete circle. When Shayna has her tail up loops over her. Mariner's is straighter. Before this post I never looked closely.
I think it's a perfectly normal thing! And your puppy is adorable!! Our doodle's tail has a slight curl and when he's outside he holds it in different positions for his different "moods" - if he's on a mission his head is straight out and so is the tail. If he's interested the tail is up and more curled towards his back. He has pretty thick fur on his tail, rather coarse, and I just love it - I call it his plume! It looks like a feather on a fancy, old fashioned pen. Only bad thing is he does not like you to mess with his tail - as in brushing. Dad has to be in the front with some peanut butter and then it's okay! LOL
