Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi,

I was all set to order  a larger cage type crate for my 12 week puppy, but then I thought of how he loves his plastic carrier type crate (the carrier type) .  Does anyone has anyone opinions (pros and cons) of one over the other?

Thanks!

My only thought is that with the large metal one he can see more. Aren't the plastic ones more closed in? If you use it in the house in the wire one he can see you better, I would think, and it might help ease him. You can always put a sheet over it to help him sleep if he prefers. We have Buddy sleep in his crate. We put a sheet over it at night and I think he likes that, but then when I need to I put him in there during the day, as a time out, and he can still get a good view of me.

Just my thoughts! :)
We purchased a wire crate with the moveable divider, it helped with house training, as he didn't have room to pee...at six months the divider has been removed. The crate is in the laundry room, which is where all the animals sleep at night. Our mini labradoodle is in a plastic carrier, but that is what he came with when he was rescued/rehomed. The wire cage will fold flat for transportation when you go on vacation etc.
The wire one does allow them to look out more - that is what we used for Peri since the beginning.
I prefer wire ones - they can see out if they like to, or if they prefer the "den" you can cover it with a sheet or blanket. Wire ones fold flat, are easier to clean, and allow for better air flow
I have both. I use the plastic one that they can use on airplanes for travel in our car. I have two wire crates for my home. We have a smaller one in our kitchen for short confinements and the larger one upstairs for nap and bedtime. The larger one has a big comfy pad and we cover it on the top and front sides with towels for 'privacy'. If you go with the wire, make sure that it has the divider that can be moved as the puppy grows.
We bought the big wire crate. We only really used it for a short while. Definetly not even 6 months. Neely behaved on his own very well. But then we were going to fly with him and had to purchase the plastic one as well. So we really should have just bought the plastic one from the start. It also takes up a bit less room as well if you plan on using it all the time. Seriously I wouldn't get another crate at all I would have sectioned off an area of the house with a baby gate at first. By the time they can really get out on their own hopefully they are well enough behaved to be left out.
Darwin likes the wire ones because they allow more ventilation. He always seemed to be panting and hot in our plastic one, and never does in the new wire one. The benefit of plastic ones is that they are easy to travel with. Just put them in the backseat, put your doodle in them, and go. With the wire ones, you have to collapse them to move them. Of course... Darwin's plastic crate was too big to fit in our car anyways!
Bodie liked the plastic because of the dark, den-like atmosphere, but it made him too hot. We switched to a cage type crate and added a water filled cooling bed and he's much more comfortable. I drape a sheet over part of it at night, and he seems to like it.
