My Goldendoodle, Bailey has a yeast infection. I have tried apple cidar vinegar, changed his diet, etc. Anyone have any helpful hints on what to try next? The vet put him on an antibiotic but Bailey became lethogic, etc. so he said to stop the med.
Strange that your vet gave him an antibiotic, did you ask if he could give you an antifugal instead, like Diflucan? There are several oral medications for yeast. Where does he have it? Mouth (Aka Thrush)? or genitals? Paws? Ears?
Have you tried adding Yogurt to his diet? Depending where the yeast infection is there could be other OTC options as well.
I'm sorry, the med was Metronidazole, not an antibiotic. The yeast is under his chin, paws, and somewhat around his genitals. I will try adding Yogurt to his diet.....I'll see what happens. Thanks for your info.
Try to keep the areas dry and keep him cool if possible. Yeast like moisture, darkness and warmth. If you can keep him from licking a topical antifungal might work.
You can also give him a bath with some vinegar or just dab diluted ACV on the spots with a cottonball and let dry. Yes he will smell like a garden salad, but it is very soothing and will kill yeast. Doesn't cost anything and doesn't hurt to try. And yes, yogurt with the antifungal.
Also, the yeast is on his bed and wherever he has been laying, so wash whatever you can to keep it from growing. And wash your hands everytime you touch him. Wash the floors with vinegar as well.
Applying no sugar added, active culture yogurt to the itchy/sore spots helps too (At least for people it does. Can't imagine why it wouldn't for dogs...except he might want to lick it unless he has the cone on)
Our goldendoodle started biting at his paws in June/July..just around the same time he started swimming in the lake at our cottage. After a visit to the vet...he told us it was caused by yeast. He said his paws were itchy so he was biting them. His furry paws would get wet and then the yeast would grow between his pads in that cute dark furry area. He told us to keep his feet dry and bathe them with this oatmeal shampoo he gave us. Well how do you keep a swimmer doodles feet dry in the summer??? You just can't so we dried him off as best as we could. Then one day I was picking up dog food at a family owned pet food store and I mentioned it to the owner. She told me that a tablespoon of "olive oil" in their dog food kills the yeast from the inside. Well we tried it and it has been about two months now....no more feet biting has ocurred for at least 6 weeks.
