Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi all,

We lost our Lab cross to cancer unexpectedly last fall, she was only 8. We loved her dearly, but now we are ready to have another puppy. I would prefer to have a puppy with lots of retriever because I love the personality, but honestly, I'd like a break from the crazy "Charlie Brown Christmas Tree" type of shedding Parker (our Lab) had. I love the "mutt" look (please no one take offence!) of the shaggy, loose doodle. I need some help though.

We have to buy our puppy from away, there are no doodle breeders in our province. So that means I will be relying on the breeder to help me pick my puppy. We would really like a shaggy, loose but soft coat. How can one identify this when they are babies? I have heard that the puppies with crimps when they are first born will be curly, and the pups without crimps wavey/fleecy. But I have also seen some doodle pics where the coat never turned very "doodly", no beards (I love the beards! Had Olde English Sheepdog as a child, and I have a soft spot for that). If there is an F1b litter and puppies with smooth looking coats, will they turn out to have fleecy coats? It is all rather confusing and nerve wracking.

My profile pic is the doodle look I love. How would you experts describe that?

Thanks guys. Hope you can help. There is an F1b breeder I really have a good feeling about expecting puppies at the end of the month, but I don't know if they can help me pick a puppy from thier litter that isn't poodley. I know they are beautiful too, it's just not what we are going for. Temperment wise we need even and gentle - I have a toddler and a bay.

Thanks again, any advice is appreciated. Or send me some informative links if you have them.

I am confused too, but our breeder states her puppies are now Multi Generational or F3's otherwise known as Third Generation Labradoodles. She says they have a softer gentle curl type of coat. I have noticed Vern sheds a little.

Hi, I have a mini F1 goldendoodle named Jax.  I was very worried about getting a curly doodle as I also like the shaggy look.  You just have to trust the breeder and tell them exactly what you want.  I also sent a picture of the type of puppy I wanted and I think that helped.  This is Jax when I first got him at 8 weeks.

And this is him today at 8 months

He didn't have any crimps in his hair when he was born and I do think that that is somewhat of an indicator as to what type of coat the puppy will have.  He has definitly turned into a shaggy doodle!

Love that Jax!!!  His coat looks lighter

Just catching up with this discussion...I live in Ontario...but have family in the east coast...I can see what you are saying about wanting certain characteristics in your doodle.  I was very specific to the breeder...we wanted a non shedding coat. and we also asked for a squarer jaw...and we asked for a red coat.  We went to see the puppies...5 male and 5 female in the litter and the breeder  knew our criteria..she picked out 2 males and we honestly wanted both of them...came home with Thomas the fat one.  My point is that the breeder knew which ones had that thick hair that doesnt shed from the time they were born...they just know.  His hair isn't what I would call curly...a thick wavy coat.  Also...he isn't red anymore!!
Really? Not red anymore? How red was he? Of course, temperment is paramount to looks, but these doods morph so much, I find it fascinating!

I have a mini Australian Labradoodle and my breeder told me that she can tell at birth which pups will have a curly (wool - poodle type coat) or the fleece (shaggy coat).  The pups that show some waves in the hair at birth will be your wool and the sleek coated pups the fleece.  1st photo is Rooney at 4 weeks, second photo is Rooney at about 5 months

You can see the coat better on this one.  The key is your breeder, make sure that they know what you want.
Thanks everyone. All of these pictures are a great help.
Rooney is gorgeous. The more doodle types I see, the harder the decision becomes!

You mentioned that you had an OES as a child.   As far as coats are concerned have you considered a Sheepadoodle?   There are some in Canada being bred.  I have NO recommendations for a breeder and I don't know any breeders who breed this mix.  One important point,   they may not have the same temperment as a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle.  There are many articles as of late about the problems with OES temperament. Getting a NICE coat is one thing, getting a NICE Dog is another important aspect in looking for a healthy life-time companion.  Please consider this when you are looking

But on another note, check this out.   Since my Starlit was a rescue, we often think she may be an OES/POODLE even though she was listed as a Labradoodle F2.   She has very large rounded hips, a different snout, but gorgeous coat.

Here is a picture for a Sheepadoodle from www... just an internet ... site.com  ? :

Here is my Starlit at the same age:

Love the look! She does look like a fuzzy sheep. Olde English Sheepdogs were always big, gentle clowns when we had them. Not a nasty bone in their body. And the puppies (our dog had puppies once) look like panda bear babies. Out of this world cute.

Temperment is paramount for me, so I think goldendoodle is where I am.

Thanks for the info!

Peggy,

Just an FYI, we may not post breeders in open discussions.  You may place this information on her page or privately email her

Thanks
