Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I've recently been doing some pretty hard studying for an exam to finish my Nursing Degree and after a loong day at the library or after work I come home and notice myself burying my head into Bailey's coat and sniffing it all in! LOL.. something about her scent is so calming.  When we first got her my family commented that she smelled like Honey and honestly I thought she smelt like sweaty sock. But now, THATS ALL I CAN SMELL!! She gives off the wonderful aroma of honey and I love smelling her! (Weird, I know!!) Even after coming in from playing in the snow, after she dries off.... Honey!

So I just wanted to do a fun discussion on whether or not your Dood has a unique smell? I can honestly say I've never smelt a friends or family members dog and been like MMmmm, so maybe I've just gone crazy, or maybe its another thing that is yet, unique to Doods!

Oh Camilla, please don't tell me that Darwin stinks!!!!  He is the idol of so many of us admirers!!  We bathe Gracie anywhere from 2-3 weeks at a time.  She is a total Tom Boy and is always running, laying in the grass or on the cement.  I keep her brushed but we do wash her paws at least once with shampoo every day.  This is because we throw her ball on the lawn and her feet get wet and dirty.  Or she goes in the mud and stomps around.  We also give her face a quick soapy rinse off.  I keep her diluted shampoo by the hose.  I also am not fond of beards, especially on a girl, so Gracie's chin is kept short but she does have the snout puffy hair.  Probably the daily shampooing.  She really doesn't ever stink though.  No lie, no denial, just a good smelling Doodle!!!

Yes, it's our dirty secret. Pun intended :-) He has a bad habit of licking his chest and front paws, and I think this contributes. We brush him daily and bathe him bi-weekly but towards week two... I have been wondering lately if maybe 2 weeks is too frequent, and is drying his skin. Which is why he might be licking? We give him EPO, and his skin doesn't appear flaky or red... but I don't know.

Even worse, he has the nastiest breath you have ever smelled. But he looks so cute in pictures doesn't he? LOL

Wow...poor Darwin.  Gracie hardly ever licks herself and her breath is not doggy at all.  That was another thing I liked about Doodles.  I didn't know some had not so nice breath.  Gracie so far has not had any skin issues at all.  Hardly ever scratches and if she does it is usually around her collar.  No hot spots, flakey or dry areas.  In the summer she can sometimes get bathed once a week!!!  I really do swear by the human shampoo Pantene 2 in 1 (with conditioner already added).  I just dilute it so it is watery and disperses through the hair very easily and rinses out easily.  Her hair is so soft and silky.  If we use dog shampoo it feels dry and wooly and the comb won't go through.  Gracie doesn't have any additives to her food either except green beans which we started about 3 weeks ago.  She is on Acana grain free and green beans.  That is pretty much her diet other than liver treats or chicken treats. We don't do vitamins and only Comfortis and Sentinel once a month.  I use the ear wash in her ears every time she is wet or gets a bath.  No stinky ears and I clean them out every week regardless.  I guess we are just lucky to have a neutral smelling Doodle!
thanks for the Pantene tip, I've been looking for a new shampoo for the pup.

When Maddie comes inside from playing in the snow she smells like clean clothes hung out to dry - so clean and fresh - I can't get enough of her and keep hugging and kissing the top of her head.  She always smells good and we give her regular baths and face washes when needed.

She never really smells like a 'dog' and I so love the fact that my house and my car don't smell doggy like some I've been in.

Her feet do have a bit of a salty Frito smell as several people have described.

Yeah! I am always smelling Bindi. Not Sure why, but your right she doesn't smell like any other dog I've been around.
Ginger does not smell so good.  I wish that she had a fancy smell, like honey, or rosemary..but no...just dog!
I smell my doodles all of the time. I don't remember ever smelling my other dogs. I just love the fragrance of Doodle.
Yup.  Penny has a wonderful fresh smell to her that I can never get enough of.  Oh yes... she also has the "Fritos Paws" smell that many of us have commented on.  Her paws smell like Fritos!
My dogs tend to smell like whatever "treasure" they found in the yard.  Yesterday it was mole.  Otherwise, I count it lucky when I don't smell them :-)  When they come in from playing they tend to smell like wet dirt.  I wash them about once a month with diluted kids shampoo & conditioner in fruit "flavors". This pleasant smell lasts for a couple days unless they've been out playing Indiana Jones again.  There is an all-natural flea & tick spot-on treatment that I use occasionally & it has the wonderful smell of cloves and spices.  Doesn't do anything for fleas and ticks but it's almost worth it for the smell :-)
