Clearly I am clueless because I haven't groomed Toby myself yet, but I really think I can do it, thanks to the encouragement I am getting here!  Does this set have what I would need?

Hi Sandy...

I have learned so much from our friends at DK...and would love to share what I've learned with you...

My understanding is that a cordless clipper would not be the way to go...since it wouldn't be as powerful as one that plugs in.

The clipper that was recommended to me by most is the Andes 2 speed Ultra Edge.

The blades and combs in stainless were said to be the better option.

I found it for a great price at Cherrybrook...with a really good special add on.

As far as shears go...there are many good ones...but what was recommended to me were the Ed Geib...and I found them for a good price at Petedge...

You can find the other items that you need there too.

You will need some good shears...one straight and one curved... a pair of blending shears...and a small blunt edge pair for smaller detail work...such as around the eyes.

Some people also get a very small clipper for the feet...and use that...along with scissors...to do the paw pads.  I think that is a matter of preference.

I hope this is helpful...and the best of luck to you...

I am in Canada, so I'm pretty sure buying from the U.S. sites you listed wouldn't be cost effective for me, but thank you for all the detailed information you provided.  I will look around on-line and see what I can find.

You might also look at your feed supply store or dog supply store.  Most animal feed stores carry the animal clippers.
Sandy...what Susan said is correct.  She is a good learner and student!!  ha ha  Those are all the recommendations I and a few others pretty much gave her.  Don't waste your money on a cordless clipper.  You need the consistent power and duration.  You won't make it all the way through a Doodle on batteries!!!  Gracie Doodle is 73 lbs and a standard.  I use all the stuff Susan recommended above.  I've been at this for over 2 years now and have upgraded various tools as I went along.  Had I known the first time I could have saved a lot of money.  Basically I have my "starter" set and now my "know what I am doing" set!!!  I'm sure if you Google the key words like Andes 2-Speed Ultra Edge in Canada you can find them???
I will look around online and see what I can find.  My hope is that this is a smooth transition for both Toby and myself.  I bet the groomer doesn't kiss his head and tell him he's being a good boy.  :)
I am sure that any Doodle who has been groomed by a professional is so happy to have mommy doing it !  I give Gracie lots of breaks and treats and we play ball during the breaks.  It does take up half a day but I feel it is quality time with my baby and that is what it is all about.  It is a very good bonding time with your Doodle and the kisses are the best.  Gracie gives just as many as I give her!!!
That is so true. When I gave Jake his haircut it took us over few days but he did'nt get stressed out.
And Gracie always looks beautiful also.
Thank you Lynda!

Thank you for the compliment Nancie...(smile)

You have been an amazing teacher for me...and I have learned so much from you and others from the Grooming Group!

It really did feel good to be able to help out someone who had questions...and know what I was talking about...thanks to all of you!

Of course...I'm still learning...so...I'll be looking to you and the other "experts" for advice!

I guess that means...I'm a Groomer In Training... Lol...

The set that you found at Costco is not as powerful as the one that Susan mentions.  It is very useful for the small areas such as in front of the ears, and the sanitary regions and if you clip between the pads of the feet it is also good in that area.  The cordless set at Costco is smaller and quieter so I often use it for these areas as it seems to be less irritating (due to the noise) to the dog (especially dogs that have not been groomed a lot before).  I use the Andes 2 speed and/or the Oster 2-speed clippers to clip the remainder of the body as they are larger and much more powerful.
I think that this set would be a good starting point, but the "cordless" is a function you probably would not need.  You will get more power from a plug-in clipper and you don't need to worry about batteries or recharging.  Actually, the clipper for the face, sanitary area, between the toes, and the tummy area is all that you need with a clippers.  The rest you will probably want to do with the scissors.  So, start practicing.  You will find it is very satisfying to be able to do your own grooming if you have the time.  And, your dog will love it.   Mine does.  Actually, the poodle in them makes them just love the one-on-one grooming.  Oh, and do not forget the ears (on the insides) and the toenails.  However, you may want to save that for another grooming session.
