We went to the vet again with Huff on Wednesday for his ears (It was the tenth day of using the ear drops and it didn't seem like it was completely gone). A different vet was there this time and he said that it might be an allergy! He said that some dogs are even allergic to human skin! Weird isn't it? Another thing he said was that it might be from him not having enough trace elements in his food. We don't feed him dog food so he gets chicken, rice, vegetables, and potatoes. He said that we should give him the innards of the chicken and maybe add some canned dog food. So since then, we have been adding a half a can of dog food in his dinner and adding the innards of the chicken. He also gave us some more ear drops and a special ear cleaner. Oh and guess what? I learned that a chicken doesn't chew it's food, it goes into this sack when they swallow it, so it can be crushed and then they can digest it. Gross, isn't it? haha. We put that sack in his dinner too. Grosss...... the vet also said that if it doesn't get better in a week or so, we should eliminate all treats from his diet to see what he is allergic to. Huff said that if we have to do that, we might as well just euthanize him.....

There are supplements you can buy to add to the food you cook him to make sure he gets all the vitamins and minerals he needs.  Poor Huff, hope he feels better soon
Our Springer is prone to ear infections, but since last summer we were unable to get his ears cleared up.  Suddenly I realized that we had changed the meat source of his kibble to fish at that time.  About two months ago we switched to lamb and his ears are clear and staying that way.  Over these months we have seen several vets who 'subbed' for our regular vet who tried to sell us on a different brand of food or get allergy testing.  I don't think that many dogs are sensitive to fish as a food source, but apparently Gordie is. We also give him EPO for his dry skin - which has improved even more with the deletion of fish-based kibble.

You should really read the reviews for Zymox on Amazon. Lots of people with your same experience have had it work for them. I can't vouch for it since Ollie hasn't had a full blown ear infection but it has helped us with his ear odor. It is totally worth a try. Here are some from petmeds site.

Allie has had near constant ear infections for like 4 months now. We have tried 5 different meds, and a surgical procedure to go in and clean it all out. Not once has the vet mentioned it may be an allergy. We are on 2 different kinds of drops right now. Did they give you something for the allergies?
No, we didn't get anything for his allergies because we don't know what it is yet! haha:) I didn't know theey could need a surgery for that. Poor Allie:( I hope she gets better soon.

Last summer Jake had a bad yeast infection and after many different treatments Zymox was the only thing that cleared it up.  Now I use it at lease once a week and before he goes to the groomer.

Did the vet take a smear of the g*** in the ear and look at it under the microscope to see if it was fungus (yeast), bacteria or both?  If the Vet just guesses yeast and treats for that, the bacterial infection can go on untreated.  Seda had ear infections once (yeast only).  She was treated with Mica VEd 1% (Miconazole Nitrate) for ten days and Epi-Otic ear cleaner to wash the ears out.  I still wash them every two weeks or after she gets water in her ears.  The swab at the end of treatment showed  good ears.  My Vet thought it was her long furry ears that was the problem.  Are you cutting the hair under the ear flap and close to the head for better ventilation?

The firt vet did swab his ears and she said it was yeast. They gave us amedicine that is for both yeast and bactria though so I think it should be okay. We have the Epi-Otic ear cleaner too. No, we haven't cut his ear hair because he doesn't really have any. he has more golden retriever ears than poodle ears.

You might want to try giving your dog a tablespoon of Yogurt each AM.

Our dog loves it, and the Vet suggested it can inhibit ear infections.

Soooo...the vet said it was yeast in the ears?  Do Huff's ears have that dark yecchy smelly stuff in them? Does he scratch at them because his ears are itchy?  Our doodle has had this too.  Afriend recommended "Gentian" drops and they work like a miracle on yeast in the ears.  I have seen it take away the yeast overnight in our dog. I bought it at a privately owned pet food store and she carries a lot of holistic treaments.
Ya, she said it was yeast. His ears don't really smell anymore. Mayb if i can find that, we will try it. Thanks:)
Thoms ears don't smell really either...it is just when I clean his ears with the ear cleaner the vet gave us...the swabs come out very dark..almost black.  Our dog trainer recommended the "gentian" to us.  she has seen dogs with chronic ear infections...even some had tubes put in their ears.  She said this gentian cured all of them.  So I researched and found a store that carried it...when our doods ears get all yeasty we put a few drops of this into them for two days and his ears are as pink as anything.  I told my neighbour at our summer cottage about this as her golden retreiver had been to the vet dozens of times for her ears.  She tried it and then emailed me to say that her ears were clear!  Google it and see what Gentian is all about...it is from the violet plant I think. Hey it worked for my doodle and now we can avoid vet bills for yeasty ears.
