So our nine month old doodle, Dagny, is having a poop issue. About 6 weeks ago, she came down with a bad case of gastroenteritis that including completely watery stools and some vomiting. The vet put her on some anti-diarrhea and anti-vomiting medications for a few days. We also did the bland diet for several days. After switching back to her normal food (puppy wellness) she started having half solid, half runny stools. Her poop would start out solid and then turn to a runny mess. We tried adding pumpkin to her food and that worked to solidify her stools Problem is as soon as we stop adding pumpkin to her meals we go back to the half solid, half runny stools. We have once again tried giving her intestines a break by going back to the bland diet for a few days this past week. That mostly made her constipated and the moment we started adding back her normal food she was back to her half runny stools. Could this be a food allergy? Something in the Wellness food that just isn't sitting right with her? Should we try changing her over to a new food? Any suggestions on a new food? We could really use some insight into this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I was pretty closely following DK for awhile while BB had some issues with soft poo. It basically was moderately wet with a few drips at the end. (like soft serve ice cream). Never "watery". I think actually there was a bunch of issues at hand, you can go back and check out the previous posts for suggestions there, there are a lot of discussions in the PM group about poo ;-].

While it never improved perfectly, with pumpkin, he was having soft but solid poops (needed pumpkin though). We eventually ran our way through the entire bag of Taste of the Wild Prarie, and slowly transitioned to Taste of the Wild Salmon, (we think the initial transition caused the poop problem in the beginning -- from breeders food to TOTW). However, his poops are beautiful and FIRM finally, and pumpkin is just given because he likes it, and not because he needs it to keep it "in him" ;-]

Anyway, long story short, it cant hurt to try him on another food, I dont think we'll go back to the prarie formula... strange how different it was for him. But at this point, it cant hurt for you to try that.... (at least I don't think so....)

Also, I'd ask the food group, they rock!

When Casper was eating Wellness he also would sometimes be a little runny...we switched to Taste of the Wild & that seemed to take care of it. When you say a bland diet do you mean boiled chicken & rice? The few times Casp has had tummy troubles our vet had him on that 3 meals (small) a day for at least a week - 10 days & then gradually adding the food into the chicken & rice meal...I hope your baby feels better!
which TOTW do you feed?
My Shelby (now 1.5 years old) has always had a bit of a sensitive stomach.  Many a visits to the vet for serious poop issues that didn't resolve by me putting her on chicken and rice for a few days.   I tried 4 different types of food before we found the right food (Origen, Wellness, Eukenuba (Vet's recommendation) for Shelby.  We finally settled on Fromm Puppy - and at 1 year I switched her to Fromm adult.  She loves it, it's a great food and I feel good about giving it to her!

I also use Fromm and it helped with Barley's runny stinky poop. I use the Fromm Four Star Nutritionals Pork and Applesauce. I think one main protein source works best for him.

Melinda, I think you should post this question in the Food Group. You will get your answer there. I use Fromm for both my dogs and they love it and have had no problem. I even switch the formulas periodically and still no problems. Good luck.
Just one addition...Totw Prairie formula has a much higher protein content. All 3 o f my dogs eat TOTW pacific stream...protein source is salmon. I also feed 1 tbs of pumpkin per meal becos my guys love it & my old collie needs a little extra help. TOTW foods are for all life stages so there is no transition when they become adults.
great suggestion to check out the food group as well.
great to knwo! thanks!

I had similiar issues along with re-occuring bladder infections.  I tried raw food diet, at my vets recommendation.  That helped some, but I wasn't happy with the progress.  Then I tried giving her probiotics from First Choice Naturals, took her off the Innova puppy food (too rich for her) and switched to Holistic Choice large breed adult.

I also cook chicken and rice as top dressing for her food.  I  give her a little Nzyme granules (first choice naturals.com)  Haven't had a problem for several months!
