We have all seen the cute Traveler's Commerical about the dog trying to find a safe place for his bone...he burys it only to dig it up and try a bank (but who can trust banks now adays).

Anyway, Rua has a little Skinneeez pink flamingo that is one of her absolute favorite toys.  Lately, she has been carrying it around and crying.  This morning I watched her go to a corner of the living room with the flamingo in her mouth digging at the carpet.  Then she went to her fleece blanket on the floor and tried to push the blanket over the flamingo.

I get the burying...that is instinctual dog behavior...thank goodness she isn't doing it outside.  I don't understand why she is crying.  She only does this with her pink flamingo.

Any one know why she is crying?  Does your dog do this?

I think it is the motherly instincts.  My Springer does this as well!  Is the toy a squeaky flamingo?  I think mine thinks it is crying.
Don't know but the scene sounds adorable.
I imagine she's trying to ask you for a shovel?

I wrote on here not too long ago about Lucy doing this as well.  She has a brown bone that has always been her go to security blanket.  She will walk around the house crying and even howling sometimes looking for a place to put it.  Normally she ends up either putting it right beside Sophie's "go to toy" or right beside Sophie!  What I don't understand is why she thinks it is safe with Sophie!

I've heard of other dogs doing this, and all I can say is that I would love to see a video of this behavior...
We had a minature daschund years ago that did this.  She was spade after her first heat but experienced a false pregnancy.  She had a weiner sqeak toy (too funny) that she treated as a puppy.  Made a bed for it, guarded it and moved it from room to room wherever she went.  This lasted for about a week and after that the weiner became just a toy again.  Maybe this is what Rhua is experiencing.
Cooper did that with her pink flamingo - til she got sheepy who is her new favourite. She now occasionally cries with sheepy
My Border Collie Cass did this when she was young with really high value treats such as pigs ears.  She was an only dog at the time so she wasn't hiding it from other dogs but she was definitely trying to keep it safe for future use.  She was an incredibly smart dog but this is one time when instinct overcame smarts:  she would "push dirt" over her pigs ear with her nose even though she was inside the house on carpet.  She did this so much one time that she wore the skin right off the top of her black nose and then had a pink spot there for a while.  I told her "I know you think you're smart but I see that worn out nose!"  :-)
Our Teddy does the same thing to his dinosaur.  He tries to bury it under his blanket or in his bed. He also cries sometimes and it sounds like he is trying to talk to it.    He talks to his squeaky toys too.
Dori, There have been several discussions about this very same subject. It has to do with the mothering instinct.  I don't even know what you would search by....LOL!
HEY! My Aussiedoodle will do this as well and hes a male. Luckily Rua doesnt do this terrible dig/bury outside! Diesel does!! Ive had to patch so many holes that him and Auto have dug. Id like to know why they do this too!!
Lucy and Sophie each have a "go to" toy as I call it.  Sort of their security blanket.  Lucy walks around crying/howling with hers all the time.  Sophie is the one that likes to bury things.  She is constantly trying to bury her food dish.  It sits on a rug and she is always trying to pull the rug over the dish.  I mentioned this in a previous discussion, but many times Lucy will decide that the safest place for her go to toy is right beside Sophie!  I've only ever seen Sophie with this toy in her mouth one time, and that was just recently and she was in the middle of a pretty good zoomie ..... acting crazy.
