Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We are in the process of buying a golden-doodle from a breeder - both parents are standards on the smaller size, and we are interested in a little girl who we have been told is trendy to be very small at 5 weeks 2 lb, on average she is gaining .5 lb a week but worried that she will eventually catch-up.  This is the first litter with these two parents.  I live in the city and to stay with a smaller dog, under 35 no more than 40lb.  Any suggestions or ideas?

um the taking the two parents weight is way off for Gunner.  Mom 70lbs, Dad 65lbs, weight should be 67.5, Gunner weighs in at almost 90lbs!  I agree, I would look for a smaller breed especially if you have weight restrictions or are set on a smaller dog
Kylie, an Australian Labradoodle, is only 3 months old and she already weighs 22 pounds (and is extremely lean). Her mom is 60 pounds and her dad is 70 pounds. She has been gaining between 1.5 and 2 pounds per week. From paw to shoulder she has grown from 12 inches to 14 in the last four weeks. I'm thinking she is going to be a big doodle.
The weight at 16 weeks, double and add 5 pounds has been very accurate for our dogs.  But don't be surprised if your doodle weighs more that 30 pounds at 16 weeks, it is actually pretty common.

You have more chance of getting a predictable size from and Australian labradoodle, not an early generation labradoodle or goldendoodle. Goldens tend to be bigger than labradoodles.

Even with the Australian labradoodles you cannot be guaranteed - Cooper and 2 out of her 3 other siblings I know are bigger than both Mom and Dad (and they are all girls!)

I would go with a mini or medium

I was always told take the weight at 4 months, double it, and possibly add 10lb - this means Cooper would be around 50lbs, but she is 60lbs (her siblings are 55 - 75lbs, all girls)

thank you everyone for your amazing input and feedback really can say enough thanks! You all are a world of knowledge.

I was told Henry would be 30 to 40 pounds.  He will be 16 weeks this Saturday and I am thinking the formula will put him at 55 to 65, but both my vets originally guessed 70 to 75 pounds. I told them NO WAY, not that I care really, just not what I expected.  I was laughing and said they were smaller parents, but they were standards and he said you never know what gene line will show up in each dog.  He said he'd be shocked if Henry was under 60.  The Retriever was a smaller retriever at 48 pounds and the standard poodle came in at a whopping 28 pounds.  So, Henry we know Henry obviously picked up the "big gene" which I love, I was worried he'd be too small, so we are happy about this.  You may not be???
The 16 week weight x 2 + or - 10 pds has been very accurate throught the 3 years I have been following doodles. Don;t think yours would be much of an exception. I have the smallest in one litter of standards (mother 60 father 48 ish ) and he hovers around 65 pds. He is 2 1/2 yrs old. Was 29 pds at 16 weeks.  He has brothers who top 100 pds so you never know. You need a mini/medium breeder for sure. Check out my page for one of the best breeders I know. She will direct you correctly if she doesn;t have what you exactly want.
