So, I've put my deposit down and now I just have to wait. I'll either get a puppy from a littler to be born in August or I'll likely have to wait until Feb, 2012. Problem is, I feel like I've become obsessed with puppies. Anyone else out there who have had to wait for so long? How did you do it?

Oh, it's horrible!

Last year on Mother's Day (no connection at all to what we were doing, it was simply a coincidence of the calendar), we decided to go down to visit pups at a local breeder.  We just wanted to see these Australian Labradoodles in action see if we really wanted one at all.  Well, needless to say, we were smitten immediately.  I had to wait 3 weeks for my pup.

I thought I was going to die from the anxiety of it.  First, I didn't know if I was going to get the puppy I had my heart set on or if I would have to choose another from the litter.  Then, when I did find out, I had to wait another two weeks to pick up my pup.  Oh, but that's not all....on the way there, an accident happened about a quarter of a mile in front of me and I had to wade through that to get off the freeway.  UGH!

I finally got my pup,tho.  Here's a picture:

OK....three weeks isn't bad.  But then we decided we wanted a pup from the same mom in December, that was bungled because we realized we just couldn't take on a pup calendar-wise, so we deferred to a different mom, but the breeding didn't take.  So now we were stuck.  The litter from Sam's mom was all spoken for, and we were looking to wait for approximately 12 months to get the pup we wanted.

My thoughts about waiting?  It stinks.  But I'd so prefer to wait than get a dog that's not a good match.

In the meantime, I would recommend reading every book you can get your hands on (if you need the education...I know I did!) and occupy yourself with obsessive blog reading (such as mine!  LOL...or this one!).

If you have picked your breeder and you trust them and know you are going to get a great dog, waiting is a good thing. It's hard, but it gives you the best outcome.

We should finally get our new pup after waiting about 6 months.  It's a long time for us, but I know we will be super happy with our new baby.  :-)

Enjoy and visit me some times.  You'll get to see some great pictures of Sam.  :-)

Oh what an adorable baby!  I so agree with you!  Waiting is fun but realistically, there is so much to do in the meantime. I have been waiting almost 1 year; same breeder but for various reasons had to roll over to different litters.  Am now going to  get our pup in early July.  But I've done as you; reasearched, purchased products and continue to learn; especially from these forums.  It always amazes me when I learn about folks who just think, "let's get a puppy"....and do so and then...are surprised to either learn about the inate attributesd of that particular breed or the huge responsibilitites associated with being a owning a dog.  We just went to dinner last night with a couple of decided on a whim to go to Petsmart one weekend and get a rescue dog.  This was this past winter.  I was excited for them to learn that they did so but when I asked what was the breed, the wife told me "pitt bull".  Now I realize many pitt bulls get a bad rap, but if I were to even consider such a breed, I'd make CERTAIN I got it as a puppy!  They get this dog older than 1 year with no previouls history.  And now to the tune of $1800 of a personal trainer, while they've made headway with improved behavior, the dog is an extreme Alpha personalility with OTHER DOGS!  So much so, the owner is frightened to take it for walks in the park, trips to the vet, etc.  I told my husband we sure as hell won't be introducing our puppy to her dog; he'd probably snack on it as an appetizer!  All in all, the research, preparation and waiting are worth it!
hello soul mate...I too suffer from this. I have been waiting since January and my puppy was born June 2nd. we get to pick her up the first weekend of August and get to see her the 9th of July for the first time.  I think she has more toys ready for her than my kids did when they were babies. Dont have any advice except to enjoy.. I know that once we get those babies it will be alot of work
I waited 11 months from deposit to arrival...
I read DK for hours and hours.I was obsessed!! I'm sure my husband thought I was having an affair with the computer. Looked at photos of dogs and puppies, because I learnt that a lot of owners were not happy with the grooms on their dogs a did a short grooming course. Bought all the grooming products. And will groom my girl myself.
Read a few training books. How and when to socialize. It was good as I went as saw some trainers to see which one I felt comfortable with.
My breeder insists on feeding raw so I read up on that, what formula is best..
The wait is worth it.

I need to live next to you and just do what you did..

Here's my pup (Jackson) at 5 weeks old yesterday!  Three more weeks to go!

Jackson is sooo cute!  Keep us posted!

Oh holy mackerel!  That's an adorable puppy!  Oh...help!  Too hard to wait!
Gayle, he keeps getting cuter and cuter (if that's possible!).  He's simply a little honey pot!

awh...thanks, Connie!  Honey pot....as is Bocelli!!!

it is like being pregnant, except you don't have to get up at night to go to the bathroom a million times. We put our deposit down in January and hoped there would be a Lilly in the litter in June. We lucked out and there was a Lilly or we would have had to wait until next year. We will meet her on July 9th and will bring her home the first weekend in August.

I spent the time reading everything I could find and bought toys.:) The dog will have almost as many many toys as my kids did when they were little. We still have to buy a crate and collar/lead, but holding off to see what size. The breeder suggested a special food, and we will buy that later in the month.

This site is wonderful for those of us that are awaiting for our furbabies.

My husband just asked me today, "where are the ultrasound pics"? My pup is due anytime after today!
