What does your puppy sleep on?

Heather's question about sleeping and waking times reminded me that I've been wanting to ask people what their doodles sleep on. Before I got Sadie I bought her two different dog beds for the rooms I spend the most time in, and put some old blankets in the crate she'd be sleeping in at night until she was potty trained. One of the beds she destroyed almost immediately; the other she uses sometimes, but really prefers the floor--especially the nice cool tile in the kitchen and Florida room (that's what it's called, I swear). At night she sleeps in my bedroom. She's welcome on the bed but only jumps on in the morning to get me up. (Because she's bigger every day I am actually pretty happy about this.) I have a couple of very plush blankets I've tried folding into comfy beds on the floor, but she musses them up and then sleeps next to them. I know that she's not suffering, but I'm just curious about why she has no interest in anything actually bed-like and prefers to lie next to the bed on the carpet.

My Dempsey is the same exact way.  prefer's the floor (wood, tile) to a blanket or the carpet even.  I just assume it's because his coat keeps him warm enough or he's just too hot.  Would be very curious as to what others say... Good Question!

I bought cute beds too, and they both prefer the cool tile floor.  They even sleep on the bathroom floor in my room at night, even though they are allowed on the bed.  Go figure.

Teddy used to enjoy lying on his bed in the evening until he chewed it up. However, he always preferred sleeping on the floor at night, I think because he has so much fur that provides some padding! He doesn't get a blanket or bed anymore and he's fine.

When Barley got over his maniac "I must destroy my bed!" stage, I bought him a really nice orthopedic mat from Fosters & Smith to put in his crate. Barley is now over a year and a half, and no longer needs his crate. I took the crate down but left his bed. He has the option of sleeping wherever he wants. To my surprise, Barley prefers to sleep on the hardwood floor in the family room near a drafty doorway. He has always been a hot puppy and he has sweaty paws.

Becka my Kai does enjoy the tile floor and I too have put a comforter on the floor by my bed.  He may start out there but gets up during the night and I find him either on the tile floor or on a sofa he is allowed to sleep on.  It has a denim slip cover I can bleach and don't mind him on it.  He hated the dog beds I got him so ended up giving to my daughter for her dog.  I think it was the foam smell...drove him nuts.  He is not allowed on the bed.  He is 64 lbs....now.  I think they get too hot on the blankets...unless the air is turned down low he is not on the one I put near my bed.  Oh and I do know what a Florida Room is...I grew up in Louisiana....and them that here in Va.  Kai goes to bed when I do around 10:30 - 11:00pm and wakes when I do..he is 17 months now...I have to get him up usually.

I posted about a similar question a few weeks ago as my Riley prefers the cold hard floor most of the time.  Sometimes he sleeps on the couch but only for a while preferring to retreat to the cold tile floor.  I have noticed that he likes to have his head lower than his body and when he was on our bed this morning he actually went to sleep with his head dangling over the edge!  Each night he pushes his mat into a heap in his crate and sleeps with his body on the bare floor and his head dangling over the scrunched up mat.  I think he muse have slept over his litter mates in a similar way.  I am going to buy a duvet cover for him and stuff it with pillows when he is a little older.  I won't be able to resist!

Thanks for posting. I wondered the same thing. The bed I bought Cooper became one big toy and quickly was taken away when he started looking like Santa with white fluff (bed stuffing) all over his face (I wish I could have snapped a pic). Right now, given the heat here in Ontario, he loves sleeping on the kitchen tile. At night, in his crate, I just have blankets lining the bottom of it.

 

I think I may try a bed when he gets a bit older!?

Lilly too..I have a crate with a blanket in it in the bedroom. she pushes the blanket over and sleeps on the crate. when out of solitary confinement she sleeps ont he hardwood.. her day bed she uses to curl up and chew her toys.

Knowing that Murphy would likely destroy a bed at this stage, we just fold old towels and she sleeps on that. We'd like to get her a real bed eventually but she's not ready and likes the towels just fine.

The only thing Tori like about a bed at that age was seeing how fast she could destroy them... and YES! even the indestructible ones too.  NOW she sleep on it from time to time, but prefers the floor.

Brady has just turned 16 weeks and his sleeping habits have remained the same since we brought him home - pretty much..   We have his crate, and a soft dog bed on the main floor where he spends time during the day (the stairs are gated off).   I have placed his 'night' soft bed on top of a plush blanket on the floor in the bedroom beside my bed for bed time through the night.   During the day he goes between the bed and his crate and only sometimes sprawls out on the rugs or hardwood or marble flooring.   When he's invited into the living room (also gated off) he likes to sleep on the couch and at some point will wander over to the fireplace marble and plop down on that.   At night, I place him on his soft bed and he no longer stays in it preferring to sleep half-in-half-out, or on the blanket the bed sits on and more recently I often find him on the hardwood floor.   Every morning after his first trip outside, I bring him back to bed ... this time in with me to 'quietly' talk, cuddle and he often falls asleep right there beside me.   He will do that for a while and then often goes down to the foot of the bed which really disappoints me!!   I want him right there with me to snuggle!!!

At night Zach sleeps with a towel in his crate - he usually pushes the towel out of the way and sleeps on the crate tray. If he gets up too early, I try to get him to go back to sleep with me in bed after a potty break, sometimes he settles down - other times he is too restless and he ends up back in the crate until the alarm goes off. During the day he prefers the tile floor (my house is tiled - except for  bedrooms) to the couch which he is allowed on. He visits the couch - see what the other dogs are doing, get some cuddling, check out the toys on couch (are they better than the ones on the floor?). I have a  plush dog blanket on the floor for the dogs, and Zach lies on it if he is chewing or playing with toys, but he moves off of it when he is ready to snooze! It is so amazing how quickly they get into their patterns
