Lucy and Ethel have very different tails and it made me wonder what everyone else's doodle's tails look like.  Lucy's tail curls up nicely and is very full.  Ethel's is like a hairy stick.  What gives?

Even breeders of show dogs aren't cropping tails these days.  What's with doodle crops?  That's inhumane!

Peri's is always curled, unless she is sleepy.

Annie has a curled tail that is feathered.
I was thinking we needed another body part discussion (not unlike the one we had about our current slide show - wiener no wiener game - LOL).
I think my Daisy has a beautiful tail, now if I could only find the picture I was thinking of, this is not it but it's still a good tail shot.

Lyric has the tail that doodles usually have--just like Lucy's and Mattie's is a bit straighter but still full. Rio is Lyric's son and his tail curls up and i am told by my breeder that that is referred to as a "gay tail"--from back in the days when "gay" meant "happy". Nevertheless, by hubby now teases Rio about his gay tail and asks me if we can have it fixed....

I love the tail and the black on white effect---his dad has this type of tail as do three of his four brothers.

I know this was a July discussion, but I just had to post to it now that I've FINALLY uploaded my pictures from my camera. Now I love Hudson with all my heart, and wouldn't changed anything about him, but his tail is, well...... not so beautiful. To me it looks like when he was in utero, the genes were saying a little poodle here, a little doodle there, then they got to the tail and said "Whoa! Too much poodle, better sprinkle in some doodle at the end." The top is soooo curly, and then it abruptly changed to just thin hair hanging off the end.  I've never seen another doodle tail quite like it. Here is what I mean-

Paddy's is similar, but not as "long" on the poodle.  He has about 4" of poodle curls, just like Hudson's, but then it switches to retriever fluff.  He seems to be very proud of it.  It curls up over his back, like Lyric's above, and the curl gets very pronounced when he's on alert over something.
Ethels was like that. The first four inches were really curley and didnt match the rest, so i cut it shorter and it looks much better. Still hoping she gets the full plume.
I trim the curls off the base of the tail and just leave the "fluff."  It looks good.
I think Bailey's tail is starting to show a little potential LOL...But it is definately more golden than doodle looking right now.  This is her favorite napping spot right now...

And here is her tail now!

It's full and beautiful! I rarely let the groomer touch it.
