I like the wooden pin brush to start a brushing session and then move on to different tools according to the coat of the dog. Perhaps you need a grooming table with a 'no sit' loop. Teach the use of it in small stages. First, make if fun to be on the table, then reward for being still on the head loop [no brushing] then do the same for the no sit loop. Once you get a still dog for 1 second, let him down. Work towards the brushing. Once you have him tied up on the loop, ignore struggling. Don't talk, no eye contact, just go about brushing without buying into his behaviour. Once they realize that their behaviour is not changing the outcome, they will give up. You just have to be more stuborn than his is.
I don't use a loop. Actually I don't even have one and my girls all push and shove to be first. One day I turned around and 3 of them were sitting on my table. I had to take a pic. I got a couple of people to steady them while I got the camera out. They are moms, so their haircuts are a little weird in the pic.
