Hi everyone,

Lilly gets spayed tomorrow. My daughter suggested that I get pain meds for her and that alot of vets don't offer it for dogs. After I got "fixed" I would have killed for pain meds had I not had any.

Did any of your puppies get pain meds? thoughts?

thanks.

When Bexter was neutered, my vet offered that as an option.  I gave him the pain meds (can't remember the name right off hand) just a couple of days.  There was enough for a couple of weeks, but he totally seemed back to normal within a day or so, so I just kept him on it a couple of days.  I would definitely do it if it means making them more comfortable!  Why not?
Teddy did not get any pain medication after being neutered. He came home in the afternoon and slept the rest of the day and woke up barking at 4:30 the next morning. That is the only time I noticed he might have been in pain and I would have given him medication if I had it. Later that day he was pretty much back to normal.

Daisy was offered and we said yes. It is not part of the program, they consider it an extra. I gave it to her for 2 days I think.

Can you imagine being cut open and not having any meds, I can't even if it is a small incision.

Sasha didn't get any pain meds and didn't seem to need any.

She rested when she got home...and seemed fine the next day.

Probably each dog is different.

I'm sure all will go well and you will make the decision that you are comfortable with.

Lily will be up and about in no time.

I will be keeping both of you in thought and prayer tomorrow...

Curly was spayed last Tuesday. A spay is a lot more involved than a neutering. A spay involves the removal of the uterus and the ovaries. Curly was sent home on Rimadyl for inflammation and pain five days. The vet increased it by another five and added Benadryl 50 mg twice a day because she had a suture reaction? A lump the size of a pool ball which is just starting to go down in size, now it looks like a golf ball on one side of her incision. No redness, swelling, or drainage on the incision.
Poor Curley! Hoping that she is 100% improved quickly!
oh no..poor thing..
We were given pain meds when our pup was spayed but she didn't seem to be in any discomfort so we didn't use them. She slept when we brought her home and we made sure she rested the next day but by day 2 she seemed her old self and wanted to run around although we tried to discourage that. The main thing is to make sure she doesn't bother her stitches. We just used the cone at night and otherwise just watched her and if she started to lick we told her no. After a couple days she ignored the stitches and it was smooth sailing after that. Dogs have it all over humans as far as recovery time goes!
Beamer was neutered 10 days ago. He came home with 5 days worth of Rimadyl chewables. I only gave him it for 2 days. He was absolutely fine on day 3 and had his stitches out today.
IMO better to be safe (less pain) than sorry (painful). We gave Winston one rimadyl each night for a total of two nights before bed and he seemed to rest well with no prolonged side effects. It's a very personal choice. I suspect you can read Lilly pretty well by now. Good luck to you both! We'll cross our paws for her!
Sadie was given Rimadyl along with an antibiotic when I took her home from being spayed. She never seemed to be in any pain, so either it worked or she didn't need it (I suspect the former). She was pretty disoriented for the first day, and uncomfortable with the cone, so I replaced it with one of those inflatable collars, and then just put one of my tank tops on her, knotted near her waist.
Yes, I got pain meds. for Fudge when she was spayed, but the vet offered no pain meds. for Vern. If I remember correctly, I think I called and got some for Vern later. I believe in doing what is necessary to keep them comfortable and pain free. Good luck to little Lilly.
