Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

This is Mimzy. She is a 4 1/2 year old goldendoodle. We are guessing she is about 55 pounds. Her family wanted her to have a better home becasue they felt she wasn't getting the attention she deserved.  They told me that due to life circumstances, they had resorted to putting her in the basement most of the day and they put her in the crate at night. I felt I had to do something. So we picked her up and are taking care of here while we search for the next step.

This is what I was told about Mimsy by her previous owners: Please keep in mind I have not seen much of this first hand, and this is only what they have told me. I have only had her since Saturday, October 22nd, 2011.

Socially: She has lived with cats her whole life and gets along with them. She lived with a 13year old dog also. She loves people and loves to greet everyone. They told me that she greets well on the leash and has never growled.  She loves to play in the water and hunt for fish. She is very food motivated, and loves to eat- she is pretty much a bottomless pit. She does well with kids but has never been around babies/toddlers for an extended period of time.

Health: She has allergies and takes prednisone daily. She has been on the prednisone for two years or more. They are unsure what causes her allergies and have not investigated it to a great extent. Her symptoms are ususally really itchy ears and sometimes itchy skin. She has seen the same vet since she was a puppy, and she was seen a month ago. Her vet records are in the process of being aquired, but I do have the most recent Rabies tag. She is spayed. I feel a quarter sized lump on her back that I was told is a fatty tumor.

Day to day: The previous owners tell me she doesn't potty in the house and is house trained. They say she is a counter-surfer and tries to sneak stuff off of the counters, she loves butter. She hasn't been worked with much lately, but she does know "Sit", "down", "Shake" and "Come". She eats grain-free food and treats.

-----------------------------What we have seen:

She trusts women more easily, it took longer for her to warm up to my husband. She responed well to my very dominant female doodle Sophie, they now play regularly after three days of warming up to each other. She seems indifferent about my toddler daughter, and doesn't seem to mind her. She allows my husband and I to take her bone and food from her. However, she has guarded toys or treats/bones from my daughter and my dog with a soft growl. She may be better off with a home that is free of small children until it can be determined how much she guards her food or treats.

She has a very large black crate that will go with her. She loves soft toys and will play with food related toys to no end. She LOVES food and we are working on taking treats "nice". She is potty trained and eats grain free food and treats. She lets us wipe her feet off when she comes in from outside. She loves attention, and puts her nose under your hand to get a pet and love. She comes very quickly when called.

This sweet girl needs a home or rescue group that can really take the time to investigate her allergies. She is not bothered by her allergies at this point, but prednisone long term is not the best option for her.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read about Mimzy. I am doing everything I can to give her a good home until we find her the help she needs. If you read my page, my Sophie was labeled "unadoptable" and is now a very important member of our family, we love her so much. I want the same for this sweet girl. She will be an amazing pet to someone.

She has not been surrendered to a rescue group yet. She may need a consult with a dermatology specialist, and the testing for her allergies could be very expensive. I am looking for a rescue group that has the ability to help her. I have discussed her situation with Second Chance Rescue Group, and they have suggested I reach out to any Poodle or Doodle rescue groups as a starting point, as they may be more familiar with a situation.

I couldn't bear the thought of her suffering or being euthanized, she is a very sweet dog. I can not afford to do this out of my own pocket.

Any way that you can help would be appreciated. If you know a rescue group that could take her or help her. Please, message me and I will respond as soon as possible.

Thanks again,

Thank you for helping Mimzy. I hope she finds a wonderful home. Good luck!

Liz, thank you for opening your home once again to an "unadoptable" doodle.

You're right that Mimzy should not be on prednisone long term; it will irreparably damage her kidenys and liver. What she needs is to see a veterinary dermatology specialist because what she probably has is Atopic Dermatitis, also known as environmental or seasonal allergies. Unfortunately, Atopy cannot be cured, only managed, and treatment options are very limited, expensive, take several months, and do require testing by a specialist under anesthetic. Treatment is for the life of the dog. Please join our Atopic Dermatitis Group to learn more.

Dogs with Atopy are often considered unadoptable; it's a reason many dogs are relinquished to rescuesand others are even euthanized. Jack's specialist is convinced that his allergies are the reason he was relinquished.

I hope that you can find Mimsy the help she needs. Hugs to all of you.

THanks, I will join that group and read about what t can I do to help her now, while I am looking for a Rescue Group to help me. Thanks again Karen, -Liz
Thank you for making Mimzy a part of your family until she finds her new family.  Have you contacted the rescue you foster with?  She's a very beautiful girl and I know you will help make sure she finds her true forever family - and love her while she is with you.

When I took her in, I had no idea what I was dealing with, I just knew I had to get her out of her current situation.  I couldn't bear the thought of her suffering or being euthanized, she is a very sweet dog. Not only can I not afford to do this out of my own pocket, but I can not foster her long term. This is why I am looking for help from a Rescue Group.

You are a wonderful person to take Mimzy home with you, I am sure it creates a new dynamic in your home.

I hope your search for a new forever home goes well, she is a beautiful doodle and aside from her health issues she sounds just like most of our precious fur babies, just needs a lot of love.

Thanks and Good Luck!

Have you gone to Doodle Rescue Collective, inc? They are a great group of dedicated volunteers and should be able to help you!

You are doing something amazing for this sweet girl.  I don't have any suggestions, but just wanted to offer my support.
You can also try iDog, the other Doodle rescue group:  Rescue@IDOG.Biz
Good luck to you. You are very kind to take this on. Hope you can find a good place to take her.
