I would bring a photo - or many photos of what look you want.....and I'd also bring a photo of what you don't want. Your Doodle may look like a poodle but he's beautiful!!!!!

Gradybug is beautiful no matter what! Could you simply ask them to do from behind the ears and down so they DON"T TOUCH his FACE? This seems to be the big problem for groomers - the face. Then you could do it you self. Or, yes, take a photo of exactly what you want next time. You can probably find a good one here on the doodle grooming disucssion on DK. This is what I'll do for my BradyBum next time I take him!

I agree with Carol - the second time I got my dood groomed was much better since I emailed the groomer a picture. I found the perfect cut in the DK pictures, actually!

I don't get my dood for two weeks, but I have been on DK for more than two months researching EVERYTHING. I keep seeing people that have your problem. Groomers not understanding..."Don't poodle my doodle" The best advice I see is to search for a pic of a "well groomed" doodle with the post groomed look you like, and bring it it. Be exact with the directions, that you want your doodle groomed that way. I am planning on using that strategy for my future grooming.Just thoughts from an ultra newbie :) P.S. Even with the poodle look, still a sweetie :)

My groomer totally understands not to touch my boy's face without discussing with me first. I never leave my dog alone with her (not because I don't trust her but because I stay to reassure him), and I always trim up his head and face before we go, so it's pretty much done. She is so afraid to do anything to him without my express permission that when my husband took him while I was out of town, the groomer insisted he call me long distance to ask about specifics! I admit I felt bad about that because he did have the directions and has watched me trim the dog many times. Anyway, I go with the suggestions above -- take photos and do the really important parts yourself. But I have to echo this: what a beautiful dog you have!

I bet as a newbie, it would be to my benefit to stay with my dood (like Trudy does.) For me it would be to learn how to trim up her face myself. As a new doodle owner, I have no experience. I see so many of you groom your own dogs, or at least parts of them. I would love to learn to do her face, and allow the groomer to do the rest. I surely will have a pic/pics in hand though. Poodles are great for poodle lovers. I love the doodle look :)

Oh, Gradybug is such a beautiful Doodle. I think we all have had our Doodles turned into a Poodle at one time or other. Like every one is saying...take tons and tons of photos and point out the exact areas you do NOT want shaved or made too short. You might want to buy one of the DK 2012 Doodle Calendars if you have not already. There are so many photos in there of all types of hair coats that you should be able to fine one similar to Grady and use it as an example. So does Gus get groomed too? Any problems with them making him look like a Poodle? Just curious :)

Gus's coat is very different than Grady's. Gus had a lahsa apso face with his first and only grroming experience. The family was horrified that she cut off his ultra cool but slow growing goatee! His hair is slower growing so I can manage him easier and the black color is forgiving to my self trained skills!

One of the most noteworthy differences between a poodle cut and a doodle cut is at the top of the head and the ears. In poodles there is always supposed to be definition between the ears and head. Even if the coat is longer. With doodles, the head and ears need to blend together so the top of the ear is hidden from view. You achieve this by layering. If I have a short head, I leave the hair at the top of the head the shortest and it gets progressively longer as you go towards the ears. The ears should be short ie just below ear leather, and the ear coat should be layered.
I think if you had just done the top of the head differently, you would like your haircut a lot better.
The second notable point between poodles and doodles is the muzzle. Doodles always have longer hair on the muzzle and poodles most often have shaved muzzles. There are specific haircuts for poodles that do have longer muzzles, but usually they are more shaped or formal than a doode's muzzle.
The third thing I would do for myself is leave the legs a bit longer, particularly around the feet. Think 'tube' or even 'bell bottom'. Don't follow the contours of the leg. I also leave the chest a bit longer so from the front, a doodle with a pretty short haircut has a longer look.

Thanks. I love the tube look to the doodles legs. He had that before the groomer got a hold of him. His coat was about 4-5 in. long. Will it grow out ok? His muzzle hair grows soooo slow!

I agree totally. The big difference that I found was the head. Poodles have a topknot and longer ears. The doodles are rounded on the top of the head into the top of the ears and then the ears are cut shorter. The good news is that Gradybug can be cleaned up well in just a few weeks. Her legs look pretty good and she is not cut short around the feet, so you just need to clip down the ears (length) and round the top of her head to get rid of the poodle look. It really is a nice cut except for her poodle head.
