Hey all,
So Ollie got his 16 week shots yesterday and again had reactions to them. Last time at 12 weeks I did the shots on a Friday and so I had to take him to the Emergency Vet Clinic, but I learned from this and had his shots done on Wednesday this time. They gave him a benedryl shot beforehand hoping it would help with reactions and then he was to take benedryl for the next 2 days. This helped some because he did not throw up like last time and he was not quite as lethargic, but he still got really bad diarrhea. He is at my vets office now. He was still hyper and goofy this morning even after getting up every hour or so.
Does anyone else's doodle react like this? If so what do you do to help him/her? I would hate for this to be a problem every time he gets shots, but it just might be...

Did he get vaccinated for a bunch of things at the same time yesterday?
Cooper had a horrible allergic reaction (swelling of his face, mouth, eyes, excessive drooling, projectile vomiting) when he got his Rabies and DHLPP shots at the same time last year. I had to rush him back to the vet so they could give him a steroid and antihistamine fearing that his airway might close off.
This year when it was time for his one year boosters, we did the DHLPP and then did the Rabies a month later with a dose of benedryl before each (since we aren't sure which he was allergic to or if it was the combo of them all at the same time) and he spent the day at the vet's office so they could monitor him. We didn't have any problems this year.
Maybe that would work for you.
Hey Jennifer! Yeah he only got his distemper parvo vaccine. (He has his 4th parvo to go, then hopefully we are done with shots for a while). They gave him the benedryl shot 10 minutes beforehand...it may have helped some considering he is not as sick as last time. It's just a bummer that the little guy has to go through this everytime. It kind of breaks my heart and worries me to where I then feel sick. Hopefully they will come up with a solution/plan for his next shots...
Bummer. My vet gives the benedryl and hour before the shot so that it has time to really get into Cooper's system. I don't know if that would make a difference with Ollie.
You said he's not as sick this time so maybe it's just cause he's young and he'll outgrow as his immune system matures.
Sorry I'm not more help.
Cubbie gets like that when we use flea and tick products on him but haven't noticed anything major after the shots. When Cubbie was a puppy he would lay around for a few hours after his shots but never had any stomach issues. What did you vet say about Ollie's stomach troubles?
I actually just got a call from the vet. He is doing fine, she said his attitude is good...which is funny to me. He definitely didn't know he was sick this time...he was frustrated that we had to go back to bed at 4 am instead of run around and play. She said that his good bacteria is low so he will be put on a probiotic. They also gave him another shot of benedryl and I am to continue the benedryl and they are putting him on a different diet for a couple days to help his stomach get back to normal. I guess it's just how he reacts to shots...the two vets in the office are going to talk and figure out what is best for his next shot. I am really hoping it is something he outgrows.
Rachel.... so sorry to hear Ollie had another bad reaction! What a bummer!!! Glad to see the update that the vet's office called and said he is doing better. Hope he gets to feeling 100% again real soon.... Shelby sends doodle kisses!
I really hope he feels better soon, this is such a bummer.
Throwing up again like last time. Pray that it doesn't continue.
How was your night?
How did Ollie do last night? And in response to Sue's comment - I know there is a shot they can give to stop/reduce vomiting.... Shelby had to get the once and it worked within and hour and her appetite was back full force!
Hope he gets to feeling better soon.... Shelby says she wants to play!!!
Hey all,
Ollie only threw up those two times and has been okay ever since, thankfully. Poor little guy just does not do well with shots. His system is still a little messed up and hopefully he will be more "regular" here soon. He is on prescription wet dog food, which he LOVES, but he is still hungry after the prescribed amount, so he has been rather ornery. Luckily we only have one more meal of the canned stuff and then we go back to his regular food. I hope he does okay with transitioning back. It terrifies me when he gets sick. I freak out every time. Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers.
