Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Today I was sitting at my kitchen table peeling apples for my famous apple pie and looked up to see Bexter trying to hit his paw on the refrigerator water dispenser lever.  WTD?  I didn't know what he was up to at first; I just thought he was getting into mischief.  (I know, I know...The dog is smarter than his owner) Then, I  noticed that his water dish was out of water and realized he was attempting to get himself a drink.  He has seen me fill his water dish with that fridge water dispenser a million times.  I guess he figured, "Mom, if you're not going to get me a drink, I'll just get one myself."

Now I know that these doodles are known for being smart (which is one of the reasons why I picked one).  Then, I read about Lucy & Ethel letting themselves out the door.  I started thinking...What smart things have your doodles done that have surprised you?

Like alot of us, I have hung a bell on our back door for Knox to hit when he needs to go outside. It's tied to the handle and is level with his nose, about two feet from the floor. Courtney, our 13 year old Jack, has been housebroken for ages and never used bells, so I put the bells at Knox's height, not her's. I think it's funny (or smart!) how Knox will ring the bell for HER to go outside! He rings it and then will step back when I come to open the door. Courtney will do her business and when she's ready to come in, Knox will ring the bell again, signaling for me to open the door to let her come back in. It's like it's his job to communicate for her! At the very least, he's her ''door monitor!"

Doris! This is amazing! That Knox is such a servant-hearted dood.

I never under estimate the "smarts" of any dog !!!  My Sasha is smart as a whip, she know my routine in the morning when I go to work and goes straight into her crate when she sees me get my purse and put it on the kitchen counter.  And Oliver is trying to open the handle on my back door to get in or out, now my back door is all scratched - LOL  He know I do something with the handle and always pulls it down but has not figured out yet that he has to push at the same time.  I know it is only a matter of time before he get its - darn doodles they are just so smart !!!!

As soon as I brush my teeth that means I'm heading out the door and Chloe will run and sit on her corner of the couch waiting for her you better be good treat. So now even if I brush my teeth and am not leaving she will do this!

Myla is smarter than an alarm clock as you see it's Thanksgiving and I am up at 3:30 because that's when DH would be up for work! (I wish she was smart enough to know weekends and Holidays!)

Now Bexter IS one smart doodle! Most dogs would push their empty bowl around not dispense it themselves!!! Too funny!

Apparently when I was a little girl I was very independent (some say that hasn't changed at bit), but was famous for saying "ME DO".  My Dad still says that to me today.  Anyway I think that is Bexter also, he was just saying "ME DO".  He doesn't need you to get his water for him, he will do it himself!

I'm thinking is a really good thing that Guinness and Murph are cute, because they don't do anything like opening doors or getting their own water.  Murph is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.  I think Guinness is pretty smart (although certainly not a Doodle genius)....his claim to fame is being able to hunt down treats anywhere in the house (my purse, pockets, cabinets, my closet shelf) and then finding a way to get to them.

I give Phoebe broken ice cubes from the dispenser on the refrigerator door all the time.  She has successfully gotten ice herself (we are working on 'unlearning' that skill but it is a tough one for me to master) but, if the cube is whole, she will not take it but, rather, get me to give her broken ones.  Also, my daughter takes piano lessons in our home and although the piano is downstairs and totally out of Phoebe's sight, she will whine by the top of the steps when the thirty minutes are up each and every week.  Her teacher and I figured it was because she stopped playing, so her teacher has tried each week to 'trick' Phoebe by changing up the end of the lesson--playing a different song, ending a little later, etc.--but she has yet to get her!  Clearly, Phoebe can tell time.  :)

We have a "lock-and-lock" bin where we keep her food and when it gets close to dinner time, she tries to open it to help herself.

Too funny, Hattie is running the reverse Pavlov on you, as long as you don't start to drool when the bell rings you should be fine. :>)

Love these smart dood stories!  Trav figured out very early that I'd get up and go to the door if he sat by it, looking like he needed to go out.  Now he sits by the door whenever he wants me up and around, and does his 'pretty sit' there, hoping for a treat instead of going outside.  Yesterday I realized he knows the word 'vacuum.'  He loves to bark at the vacuum cleaner, and when I was muttering to myself about needing to vacuum, he trotted over and stood in front of the closet where I keep the vacuum!

Wow that Bexter is a real cracker jack!  Sounds like a lot of very smart dood here.  Gavin is middle of the road - he is smart enough, but not Mensa material.  I have played the shell game with him, putting a treat under one of three cups then shuffling them around.  He always goes for whatever cup happens to be in the postion of the one that he saw me originally put the treat under.  Oh well :)

So smart!
