Usually Winnie is a bundle of energy. My husband and kids can get her running and jumping around the house like a crazy girl. A game of soccer with the family in the yard is her all time favorite thing to do. Since Friday afternoon we have noticed that she is acting odd. The best way to describe it, is that she is acting like a 12 year old dog. She walks slowly, she won't jump or run. When she gets on the couch it is really slowly and carefully. She walks slowly around the house, and then she just stops, and stares into space for minutes at a time. She approaches her food and water as though she is expecting them to attack her. She just lays around with her eyes half closed. And nobody can coax her into playing!
Friday evening I was so alarmed by her behavior that I took her to the emergency vet. Winnie has eaten socks and underwear before, so we thought that she had done it again. They took x rays but couldn't find anything. The vet thought she was just a really nice, well behaved dog. Little does he know, that is why we were concerned. Ordinarily she would have tried to jump onto his reception desk! We kind of laughed it off and said she was suffering from "good girl syndrome". But now we are onto day three of this odd behavior. I will take her to our regular vet tomorrow. But in the meantime what could this be? Is she depressed? She seems to be hurting, but we can't figure out where? This is just the oddest thing. Any thoughts, anybody?

How is her "output"? Any changes in your routine lately? If you celebrate the holidays, perhaps that has thrown her off. Did she eat some human food, perhaps? Hope she is back to her rambunctious self, soon!
I'm sorry to hear about Winnie's unusual change in behavior. We had something similar happen to a dog years ago. She was, like Winnie, a dog that approached life "full speed ahead" so we KNEW something was wrong when she awoke one morning and moved like she was geriatric. In her case she had recently had a vaccination for Lyme disease which resulted in this reaction. Has Winnie had any vaccines lately or could she have been exposed to Lyme Disease through a tick?
I agree that the symptoms you are describing sound like pain and not any emotional issue. Please keep us posted about her condition and your vet visit tomorrow and I hope you see some improvement soon.
Is she eating at all? Drinking water? Does she seem to be favoring one foot or leg? Does she hold her body in a crouched position? Any burping, gas, gagging? Strange tummy noises or the absence of tummy noises?
Did you (or the vet) go over every inch of her with your hands and eyes?
I don't think it's depression, from the sound of it. It sounds physical to me. Dogs can act mopey if they're missing someone, that kind of thing, but if there have been no changes in their routines or their households, they don't just get depressed, and certainly not for days.
Changes in behavior/mood are one of the key indications of a health problem.
I really hope it's nothing, but I think going to your regular vet is a very good idea.
Did she have a temperature. This sluggish lethargic behaviour sounds like it could be a fever to me. Are her ears warm?
I was wondering the same thing. This is how Murphy behaved when he first started with the tick-borne illness, but he did have a fever. Do you have a rectal thermometer? If you do, I would definitely suggest taking his temp. Maybe they did that at the Emergency clinic???
Maybe canine influenza.... and she's achy?
I hope your vet is able to diagnose what is wrong with Winnie. I believe it sounds like a pain response. I'm sorry the ER vet was so unhelpful. Poor girl.
Other things to consider:
1) Flea and tick medicine application lately
2) Heartworm preventative
3) Any different food or table food
4) New chew toys
5) Any Holiday decorations she could have eaten or come in contact with
6) Any new household cleaning products
Hopefully it's just a little hiccup and she will be feeling well soon
WTD?? Why are there two sick Winnies at the same time??
Whatever it is, I hope she is better real soon!
