Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We had to put our beautiful 9 year old Golden Retriever, Ginger to sleep on Wednesday. She was an amazing dog and Sophie's best friend and companion. Sophie's only 2 and has never been without her "big sister", Ginger. She is lonely and needs a playmate. She doesn't even want to go off the deck to pottie.  We want another Goldendoodle but think we should try to adopt a "rescue dog".

Is there any place to look for a homeless Goldendoodle? Any information would be appreciated. I feel so sad for her.

So sorry to read about your loss of Ginger.  Do take your time, though, all the advice you have been offered is right, and

when the time is right, you will know it.

Julie - we got our Stuart through IDOG.  He is a goldendoodle that came out of a closed puppy mill and we got him when he was 8/9 weeks old.  IDOG has what is called their Cupid Service.  You register with them, let them know what you are looking for and they contact you if a dog comes into their system that is a match for you.  Then you got to JUMP on it.  Stuart was out of state in a Golden Retriever rescue and they didn't want me to adopt as I was not from their state.  Haha - they didn't know who they were dealing with - LOL.  As I already had a doodle and good references and was willing to drive 10 hrs, and was insistant that he was meant to be mine - they finally agreed.  Probably to get rid of the "crazy" lady!!!!  Good luck - rescue is such a great way to go!!!!!

Hahaha!! We are some crazies aren't we?! LOL!!

So sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved Ginger!   As others have said.... check out the DRC to adopt a rescue goldendoodle.   Keep Ginger forever in your hearts...

So sorry for the loss of Ginger. Good luck with your search for a rescue puppy.

You've received some great advice here, and I have nothing to add, but I do want to express my sincere sympathy on your loss.  You must be totally heartbroken.  I'm so sorry.

I just wanted to say how sorry I am. I lost m 8yr old Yorkie this past August and I still cry for him almost every day.

Much of the advice you have received is exactly what I would say. When we lost our 11 year old Labradoodle Houdini we were lost. My sons were so devastated and wanted to jump right in with another. We convinced them to wait awhile. It was the best for us. We had time to celebrate how special he was and grieve his loss. When Achilles came into our lives we were ready. Not that we forgot Houdini, but we were ready to love again.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Julie, I was so saddened to read about Ginger.  It is so hard for us, and our beloved pets who know longer have their companion. When we lost our first Beagle 2 years ago, our other girl (Lucy)  was alone like Sophie. I was very concerned as they had never been apart. They were such amazing companions. We did get a puppy within a month and I have never ever regretted that. Melody has been such a wonderful addition to our family.  I do agree that time is often necessary in these situations, but I also feel strongly that there are no hard and fast rules. If you can get a potential new dog together with Sophie and see how that goes for all, it would be a nice start, if that is possible. Getting a new puppy that doesn't fit with Sophie would be really hard and problematic. If we had waited longer than we did, we would not have our wonderful Melody.  We were still able to grieve fully, and we will always miss and appreciate our Beagles. Just be wise and take whatever time you feel is right for you.  Again, my deepest sympathies.....I hope and trust the right dog will come along for you.

I am so sorry about Ginger.  It was so hard when we lost our alpha dog who had raised all the family dogs during his 12 years.  Doodle Rescue Collective and IDOG are good doodle rescues. CraigsList is a scary way to get a dog so I don't recommend it. Also check Petfinder (putting in all zip codes within driving distance), and google in shelters and humane societies within your driving range.

Just want to express my sympathy for you and Sophie. We lost our Golden a year and a half ago. Our Goldendoodle was morose. He started shaking and showing separation anxiety. It was pitiful. Amidst our grief we were not ready to immediately get another dog. With sweet Kona grieving so deeply we decided to get a puppy. It took Kona quite awhile to accept the puppy but they are best buddies now. Best of luck to you. I'm sure you will find the best buddy for Sophie.
