Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
This is a serious topic, a copy of a post from a medical forum. I though it was very interesting. Some of this is truly amazing like detecting gas leaks with your phone.
"It is well known that dogs can detect cancer by sniffing a patient's breath.

Apparently some animals even like the smell of humans dying.

There are many diseases the nose knows, but humans cannot compete with dogs in their ability to discriminate odors.
Cancer cells produce different metabolic waste products than normal cells, and dogs, which have a sense of smell 10,000 to 100,000 times greater than humans, can detect them by smell. Their sense of smell is so keen that they can detect parts per trillion. The results of the study showed that the dogs could detect breast cancer and lung cancer between 88 and 97 percent of the time.

An artificial nose can identify brands of coffee.

Now we can finally do better than dogs and detect lung, breast, colorectal, and prostate cancers from exhaled breath using a single array of nanosensors.

Apparently the dog scan will not replace the CAT scan. To diagnose cancer we may someday use an electronic nose. Perhaps the day will come when we will be able to breath into our I-phones, and an application will tell us whether we have cancer.

I just had a tooth pulled and every single dog and puppy that I encountered during this (5 in total) had to come completely face to face to me and sniff my mouth. I was feeling completely violated!! Great danes practically have to stuff their nose down your throat to get a good whiff! LOL!
LOL!
That's interesting.
I don't usually post too much about Jack other then he can tell when I am about to get sick... The vets think that when I am going into respiratory failure/distress that I emit a different chemical in my breath that he can detect. Jack is absolutely insane when he thinks I am going to get sick.
I can give you a million examples of things like when I am doing housework and overextending myself, Jack will start walking in circles around me, jumping up on me and pawing me. He will not stop til I sit down. He also can tell when something is starting to bother my lungs before I can. If I am walking him and there is a smell outside such as fabric softener from a dryer, he will turn around and pull the other way.
Jack knows when I am overdoing it, I guess he can tell because my breathing pattern changes, He can pick up on even the slightest change, something that I can't pick up on... Often times I have friends over and if we are laughing, I lose my breath.. he will stop what he is doing, which is usually being petted by the other people and jump on my lap until I catch my breath again... Then he is gone..
I have a lot of other examples but since it is 1 10 my tme I just woke up at noon and I am way past due on starting my day..I will come back.. I totally never believed my vets when they said this about Jack, the reason the vets got involved is because Jack manifests sickness when I am sick so I always take him to the vet.
Now the vet will call and say are you sick because Jack's blood work is off.. ?? It is so weird. I don't believe it myself except I live it with him..
This is really interesting, thanks for sharing. The thoughts of having an app that could detect cancer is very freaky.
This might be slightly off topic, but whenever I sneeze, Fudge's reaction is very strange. She slowly gets up and walks away and won't look at me. It always unnerves me because I feel like she knows something I don't or senses something. I had the same thing with Vern when I had dental work done as Lorraine. Vern just kept trying to smell my mouth.
Daisy gets up and leaves the room - FAST, most of the time and then once in a while she gets up and comes over and touches me as if to say "are you okay Mom?" it's very weird.
I too think what does she know that I don't know?
My mom's friend, who is diabetic, just received a service dog--a doodle, in fact--who is trained to detect (by smelling her breath) when she is in danger of going into insulin shock.
Very, very interesting!
Interesting stuff! I watched a special one time about how scent dogs were trained--some were trained to detect cancer. Fascinating!
I really think my guys are clueless to these types of things. I recently had a test and was still really out of it from the anesthesia when I came home....my Doods were completely oblivious. When it was time for their dinner they came and sat by the bed and just stared at me until I got up. I think they picked this up from DH.
I just gotta say "that's funny" (the comment at the end...)
