Does the knuckle bone have meat and/or fat on it?
Luna got a marrow bone once with too much marrow (lots of fat) and she had bad diarrhea the next day. Never again!
The elk antlers are awesome though - Luna's been working on hers since December and still has only worn off 1/4 of it.
I had the same experience. The marrow gives my guys diarrhea. Some people boil them for just a short time to release the marrow (not too long to soften the bone itself). I've decided to stick with the antlers and not take any chances.
No meat and I only get the all white ones. I know what you mean about the meaty ones, that happened to Daisy too. It just seems now with the white ones she scrapes that softer gritty bone part and seems to get loose stool. Besides the elk antlers I'm running out of options for different chews that won't upset her stomach. I tried the bully sticks but she eats right thru them. Shes on the small size but she loves to chew!!
I was going to say the same thing--take most of the marrow out of the bone first--it is too fatty, especially for a younger or smaller dog--you can wipe a bit of peanut butter inside or freeze the bone after filling it with banana or something soft--but get her used to the filling first!
I give smoked knuckle bones to Willow, and her poo actually "dries up" from what seems to be ground up bone (powdery).
I am wary of any real bones. Antlerz or antlers are the best thing I have ever found. Nylabones are next best, but some dogs don't like them that much and you must throw them away before they get splintery - usually the ends will be really chewed up. If the nylabone gets past the end and into the long part it can splinter.
