Charlie does this thing with any squeaky toy I give him.  At the vet for this check-up today I told the vet about it.  She said that in 23 years of practice she has never heard of a dog doing this.  So I am trying to figure out if Charlie really is one of a kind for this behavior.  When he gets a toy with a squeaker in it he, of course, must tear it open and get the squeaker out.  Then he takes the little plastic plug in the top of the squeaker out of it.  He then proceeds to chew that little piece of plastic like it is a piece of chewing gum.  He chews and chews, sticks it out on his tongue, chews some more, spits it out, picks it back up and chews some more.  He NEVER swallows it.  I can leave it on the floor and the next day he will go back and chew on it again.  So, does anyone else's doodle do this?

Being the paranoid person that I am, the girls never get the opportunity to do this as anytime they have ever removed one of the squeekies (which hasn't happened since they were puppies) I take it away from them.    It is pretty interesting though in that I would think normally if you got near him when he was chewing on it he would think you were going to take it away and he would swallow it!

I'm the same way.  Once they get the squeaker out of the toy, I take it away....fun is over.  I'm too afraid of them swallowing it.

Me too.

Yep, me too......I don't ever want to be in the position of doing the Heimlich maneuver on my pup.

That is kind of how I started noticing this.  When I first saw that he had that little piece of plastic (and believe me he can get it out of that squeaker before you even can take the squeaker off of him) I didn't try to take it out of his mouth for fear of him swallowing it.  So I just watched him chew on it and then realized that he was just enjoying the chewing of it.  After many times of watching him do this I realized that he was after that chewing satisfaction from that little piece of plastic and wouldn't swallow it.  He is a very quirky boy.  Now if I could only figure out a way to make doggie chewing gum.

I think you are on to a great idea!  You could make it in all kinds of dog friendly flavors.....liver, chicken, socks.....   :>)

Socks----LOL!

Love the sock flavor.  I may have to start experimenting!

hee, hee!

Lyric does the same thing as does her son Rio--they love to get the squeaky or the stuffing out and then they play with the squeaker--no one has ever swallowed it. They will do the same thing with plastic bottles--I watch them when they chew on them, but the pieces are never eaten.

My third doodle, mattie, has very little interest in chewing anything that is not FOOD--just a waste of her precious time.

Charlie has no interest in the squeaker itself, just that little plug piece.  Unfortunately he is not like your Mattie, he has very little interest in food.

Peri takes the squeaker out first thing.  Then I throw it out immediately - I am just too paranoid!  But yes, I am pretty sure she would chew and chew and chew; she might swallow it knowing her :)
