Anyone have any idea if there is a desire for Labradoodles. We are planning to breed our female.

There is a desire for Labradoodles from experienced, reputable breeders who do full genetic health testing on their breeding dogs prior to breeding them and whose dogs were purchased under breeding contracts from other experienced breeders/mentors.

These are the guidelines all DK members are advised to follow before they get a puppy from any breeder:

If you are not an experienced breeder, or you are not being mentored by someone who is, please do not breed your dog.

Denise, I notice that you said on your page that you got your doodles from breeders. No legitimate or reputable doodle breeder would sell an intact dog without a spay/neuter agreement unless there is a breeding contract/agreement. So I guess the first question would be, did you purchase your dog with breeding rights?

You may be interested in the responses to this discussion by someone who posted here in the forum about breeding his pet dog. The original poster left the website as he did not like the responses, but it will give you an idea of how the majority of DK members feel about this topic:

And this one, from a lady who changed her mind about wanting to breed her female doodle after reading the information some of our members provided:

This seems like an odd question to me.Anyone who owns a Labradoodle, and you say you have 3, should be well aware of how much interest there is in them. Just wondering...

I wondered the exact same thing, Ricki.

I stand behind everything Karen says. Please read the other discussions she posted, there is lots to consider when breeding

do you have breeding rights to your dogs?

do you have the money to do the genetic health testing, vet checks on the mother and puppies, spay, neuter and vaccinate pups, feed pups, feed a pregnant/lactating mom, buy a whelping box, to pay for an emergency c-section if something goes wrong.?

Do you have  the time to be up all night with the mom when she delivers, to hand raise a pup if necessary, to check out all potential owners to make sure they are the right people to have a puppy, to keep and raise a pup (or more) if a good home isnt found for it for month, to start potty training and obedience training with all pups?

Can you do temperament testing and match up potential owners with the right pup?

Do you want to do all this, and have the energy to do it all?

Can you cope with the possibility of something going wrong and having to put down your dog, or one of the puppies?

Are you ok with pee and poop everywhere and cleaning it up?

Breeding properly is expensive, are you ok with LOOSING MONEY not making it?

...the list goes on and on....

To answer your question, there is a tremendous demand right now for Doodles.  That is very unfortunate because it means that unqualified dog owners are deciding that they should go ahead and breed their pets with no health or temperament testing, and then they're selling then to anyone who can write a check.

I knew the others would have this covered and they did. But actually I see postings quite often from newer breeder's who have older pups that they have not managed to sell yet. So for some breeder's the reservation lists are full but there are lots of doodle pups out there now.

You are also talking to people who are crazy about labradoodles and goldendoodles, so yeah lots of desire HERE.  I guess what matters is will there be a market for YOUR labradoodles if you choose to breed.  Karen has good advice.

Not to mention how many are found in kill shelters around the country, more and more everyday.

Case in point... http://www.harnettanimalcontrol.com/adoption_details.cfm?id=4645  These poor girls are from the same despicable breeder in N.C. that Fitz, Duke, Harvey,  Ella, Ruby, perhaps Willow, Jenny, Cassidi and my Lacey came from.  Dumped in the same shelter and probably just as HW positive.

Denise, I bought my Harlow from a breeder, on a breeding contract and have spent the big $$ to do all the proper testing.  Even with that, I have not yet decided if I will breed her.

You would know for sure if you got your girl on a breeding contract as it is clearly stated in the contract.  I would also think if you did get her on a breeding contract AND had her tested you would have stated such in this post.
