Another idiot - this time in San Diego. I just saw a news report about a woman idiot who left her 4 month old baby in the car & went shopping.  Luckily a store clerk saw the baby & called the police. The baby was in the car for ~ 10 minutes and was drenched & passed out. The woman was arrested. Will people never learn?

We just had one in NJ. The one year old was unresponsive but made it after 1/2 hour in the car!

Oh no!!

Some people should need a license/permit to qualify to have a baby.  Way too big of a responsability for idiots like that.

I truely hope the baby is ok and that the mother will learn from this, at the very least.

I agree.  At the very least every new parent should be required to take a course in childcare.

Two years ago, when my daughter had her baby, I was struck by how nonchalant the discharge process was.  It was pretty much "here's your baby, goodbye".  My daughter is a highly intelligent, responsible individual and has proven to be an excellent mother - but the hospital had no way of knowing that when they sent her home with the baby!  We require first-time drivers to complete a driver's training course, pass a written test, pass a behind-the-wheel test, etc. - but ANYBODY can have a baby or get a dog!!!

I admire the breeders and shelters that have a screening process and really make sure their dogs will be taken care of.

Unfortunately, there are so many people on this planet that "only the strong and smart survive" no longer applies.......but I digress before I go too far ;)

Deanne, I so agree. Heck, you need a permit to go fishing!

I totally agree with you Deanna, that ALL parents, especially first time parents should have to take mandatory parenting and child are classes before the baby comes, and take a test. However, that is just never going to happen, so hospitals offer many classes, some free to all delivering patients prenatally but we know we can't MAKE them participate and what's sadder is how few attend.

. However, we also know that they have known about the pending arrival for at least 5-6 months and know that there is a plethora of information out there and that if those parents don't take the initiative to learn all they can BEFORE the baby comes in those 5 months, we will never be able to teach them all they need in the short 24-48 hour stay they get. And if they are lucky, half that time they are sleeping and the other half is taken up with the 50+ interruptions an average postpartum patient gets per day in the hospital. We are medical people and dealing with providing medical care to the mother and baby. Every hospital has Homework for parents to do during the stay, videos to watch, literature to read, and any questions are answered
. We are dealing with adults that need to educate themselves and we do the necessary teaching of what to watch for medically; check for normal breathing, on back for sleep, choking prevention, infections, when to call the doctor, even bathing. But how much can hospitals be expected to do if the parents haven't even done their homework?
Yes, there are MANY babies who are sent home and we watch them leave shaking our heads thinking there goes the next statistic....but we can't keep them until they "get it" . I know hundreds of OB nurses and I have to say every one of them dearly love taking care of mommys and babies, but we can't do it all, nor feel responsible when we do hear about a child left in a car that died who delivered with us. This has happened several times in my career, and we don't even once think, oh I wish I had told her to not forget or leave her baby in a car alone. So luckily there are many new parents like your daughter, but we can't fix stupid or lazy no matter how hard we try to in a short hospital stay.
Just had to vent and defend my profession, as we care very deeply about the precious new lives we help bring into the world. but our hands are completely tied given the time restraints and patient ability, comprehension and interest they have.

I saw an incident in my area recently where the baby did not make it. Mother was shopping.

What is wrong with people??????

My mistake. The infant left in the car while the mother shopped had a seizure, but survived. It was a father who left the baby who died in the car in the heat:

I don't get it.  4 of us have responded in this post and we are aware of 4 infants left in vehicles.  How is it possible that people are so blind/deaf to the danger.  I think there is more awareness regarding the care of pets than children.  A nationwide public health notice should be made. A good venue might be on the reality shows - seems everyone watches those (even if they do not watch the news or read a newspaper).

The majority of people are unaware of the proper care of pets, too. Heck, it seems like a lot of people are unaware period, lol.
