I do not sleep with my doodles, they usually sleep in the livingroom. My house is very small and the two crates were in the living room and they got use to being in the crate and not with me when they were puppies, plus they and each other for company. Now that they are older and I do not crate them anymore they choose to sleep in the living room.
Remington was crated at night until about 6 months old. At that age we then transitioned him into free roaming at night. He sleeps with us in bed now and I love it. I wouldn't have it any other way. We are very lucky to have a big boy who loves to cuddle and thinks he is a lap dog.
I have the best of both worlds. Peri snuggles while we read before bedtime. Then she goes to her bed on the floor next to our bed for the night. Then when the sun comes up, she usually jumps back on the bag to snuggle until we get up. We actually trained her to be on her bed as soon as the lights go off.
Sophie was the same way when I first tried to sleep with her in the bed - restless. She was around 6 months when she started to settle down and to this day she has to sleep by herself at the foot of the bed. She will occassionally tolerate a quick minute or two of snuggling, but this all I get from her. Winston on the other hand would sleep right on top of me if I let him (uh, sometimes I sorta do...)
Riley was about five months old when we let him choose where he wished to sleep. We used to lift him upon the bed and thought he couldn't jump, now it's like he has springs in his legs. Up to then he was in his crate. He starts on top of me and I was a little worried the first time with all that talk of Alpha dog personalities and wondered if I should let him but turns out he likes to have his head raised so he starts in the middle with his head on my tummy. This lasts about twenty minutes and then he moves to the end of the bed, this is usually when Joe arrives in and complains that he has no room for his feet. He stretches out the full length with his head raised over the bedstead. He stays for up to an hour and then retires to the cool floor either beside me or to his own bed at the end of ours on the floor.
In the morning he jumps up at around seven and snuggles between us and waits until we get up, on the week ends that could be around 9.30. If he wants to go out he just licks my face (note it's mine and not Joe's), I take him out and then either stay up during the week or we both go back to bed.
Just to add..90 pound Seamus only gets into the bed on rare occasions during the day to play. He actually needs help getting up on the bed lol go figure...
I love the "Sleeping with Pets" 2 pictures. So very true. Hurley has been sleeping on the bed with us since he was 4 months old. We got him when he was 3 months old. He was fine in the crate in our room at night but we were not fine with that. So as he has grown he has taken up more and more room. He either stretches out between us with his butt in our faces or the stretches out at foot end by me. So I crunch up my legs and just deal with it.
Trav has been sleeping on the bed since he was big enough to make the leap on his own. He's so funny--takes his sleep time very seriously. He was quite offended if I tried to pet him while he was sleeping, and would give me a dirty look and move to a quieter spot on the bed. Eventually he accepted that a non-intrusive bit of petting was okay, and he was willing to endure it without getting into a huff and moving. He'll get down sometimes and go elsewhere to sleep, but he's always on the bed in the morning. He still takes sleep time seriously, doesn't try to play or bounce up and down, just likes to sleep wherever he chooses on the bed and stay there without being disturbed.
