Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

When I first took Charley to the vet at 9 weeks and told them that he is an Aussidoodle, the lady said "why in the world would they cross those two breeds?" She then proceeded to say it's just another mutt.  Which I guess is true.......  I've had a few others look at me crazy when I told them Charley's breed.  And then today when I took him to the vet to get neutered the visiting vet said the same thing the other vet said, why in the world would they cross those two breeds?  She then proceeded to call him a mutt also.

I know this is mainly a Labradoodle/Goldendoodle forum, but I was just curious if you guys get the same reactions about your breeds and does it make you feel bad?  I'm sure your breed has been around longer than the Aussiedoodle so it may not have the same impact.  It just feels like the people are upset that I didn't adopt my dog from the pound and instead bought one. But my thought process when I got Charley was that I wanted to know where my dog came from and know who his parents were and the testings done in "hopes" to ensure a healthier dog.  Obviously there are no guarantees but that was my hope.

I've had one or two snide comments from strangers BUT daily we get lots of people that tell us how beautiful Rooney & Stuart are and want to pet and touch them.  For a Vet or Vets to have this kind of opinion - I would have scooped my dog up and walked right outta their door.  A Vet works for YOU, is paid by YOU and should be the type of person that loves all animals.  I would not tolerate this from a Vet, Trainer, Groomer - any service person.  Get theyself a NEW, more professional acting Vet - and I'd be telling them why I was leaving their practice.

My vet loved Jack, I have no idea what they said after I left but they were very good to him.  He is a mixed breed, a mutt, a poodle and golden retriever... Call him what you want he is amazing.

I would never stay with a vet that had any staff member that talked that way...

The older I get the more I realize I don't care so much what people say (PMS days excluded) Just tonight I was walking Jack down the street and someone said "Jack is really putting on weight" He actually has lost a little weight but his hair is really long so he looks fluffy.

Next week after he gets a hair cut, I am sure I will hear that I am starving him.. People are people and well I don't think I have to explain about people... but I would not tolerate any crap from my vet.

We don't have our Doodle yet, but this is something I fear, unfortunately. I cannot stand when people refer to them as Designer Dogs. Yeah, I suppose if they were designed to be great therapy dogs with low shedding, then you're right!

I also spend some time on a wedding/nesting board with our upcoming wedding. They have a pets page on there that I visit from time to time. And people get ripped for going to a breeder (rather than a shelter) and I wouldn't dare mention owning a 'designer dog'. People go crazy over it.

I love the previous comment-- we're practically mutts too!!

You guys sure know how to make me feel better!  I tend to take things to heart too easy.

I should have been a little more clear about my vet.....they were still extremely loving to Charley and they were great with him, so it wasn't like they "took it out on him" if you know what I mean.  It just felt like a dig at me.  It's an older country type of vet, not your most up-to-date, modern place, so I'm wondering if they are just old school.  Ya know?

At any rate, you all have made me feel much better.

Great discussion and one that has been brought up before--unfortunately, this is common--I try to nip it in the bud by immediately saying that my labradoodle is a "glorified mutt"--I figure if I offer that first, it cuts them off before they can say anything--but I was once on a line with my dog waiting for something and people came up to me and oohed and ahhed over him--when they asked me what he was, I forgot my usual response for a moment and began to explain how he was a cross of two labradoodles, etc etc but the man in front of me in the line who wasn't even part of the conversation said "he's a mutt" in a very mean tone of voice--what the heck!?

Right now there is tremendous pressure to adopt rescue dogs and there are a lot of people who are going overboard when they condemn those who don't. A few years back, adopting shelter dogs wasn't "the thing to do" and criticism was rare--as a matter of fact, the people who rescued were often given a lecture about how you don't know the dog's history and it might bite, etc. So, the pendulum swings back and forth and this happens to be a bad time to buy a pup from a breeder. A friend who wanted a doodle pup just adopted a terrier mix from a shelter because her daughters who are 8, 13 and 15 years old, told her that would never forgive her if she didn't get a shelter dog--pretty strong words....

So sorry this happened to you Laurie. I would be devastated too. Not your fault though, that shelter needs to be run more honestly and efficiently.

Ginny, you are so right on.

Aside from one inherited chocolate lab, all my dogs have been mutts. My vets wouldn't insult any owner of  a mutt since they are a good percentage of their practice and they are genuinely fond of all their clients..  Like Joanne I believe that doodles are mutts (at least until they get the mix consistent).  I also think it doesn't matter if you love your dog.

I just say planned mutt (but some great plan! )  In Ireland they are relatively rare and those that are here are mostly F1's so Riley does stand out but so far I have never had anyone say a bad word though woe betide the person who does, I am so ready for them...; )

I've had a remark from a few people asking why in the world I would pay  for a mutt.  I actually got Darwin for free, but they look at me as if i'm the reason dogs die in shelters.  No, dogs die in shelters due to over-population and people refusing to spay/neuter and then let their dogs roam or get out.

I will usually tell people that Darwin is a "Golden Retriever, Standard Poodle mix" and that seems to help.  I think people who don't have one of these wonderful dogs just don't understand the cutsie names they are given, so I will usually call him what he is!

By the way--Charley is cute with a capital C!!!

How unprofessional of your vet(s)!  When I took Haley to the local rural vet at 8 weeks and a few days the receptionist said Golden(?).  I corrected her and said Goldendoodle.  She then noticed that the hair on his head wasn't right for a GR.  She put his breed down as "Golden Doodle".  No one there has called him a mutt.  They have only loved on him and the techs in the back come out to see him when I take him in.

When asked what he is in this rural area I tell them he is a Golden Retriever/Standard Poodle mix.  I gave up saying Goldendoodle because then I have to explain what a Goldendoodle is anyway.  I can't recall  ever getting any negativity about his "breed".
