Oscar is 10-1/2 weeks old and was diagnosed with a malocclusion 3 weeks ago. His lower canines hit his hard palate. He has an appt. tomorrow with the vet for his 2nd set of shots and to look at the canines to see if he should be referred to a veterinarian dentist. Up until last night Oscar has not seemed in pain in the least . He was eating well, feisty as ever playing with his 3 yr old sister, and sleeping well through the night. Last night he was fitful all night, whining quietly in his crate. I had him lay in my lap several times and that helped quiet him, but he wouldn't lay his head down (that's was gave me a clue he mouth was hurting... that, and that he squealed when I wiped his face after he took a drink of water, which I do because he dribbles so much water due to the malocclusion). He did finally fall asleep at 3am, and is very tired today thus far. He did eat his breakfast, but only after it had softened a bit (I mix dry with wet, and a little water). He had no interest at all in playing and is napping at my feet. I'm afraid to let Lucy, the older doodle out of her crate (which right now is fine with her as she's fast asleep) for fear she'll overdo it with Oscar, when he's not at all feeling himself.
Here's the bottom line: The emergency vet clinics in our area open today do NOT have veterinarian dentist available (I've checked), so there's nothing they could do for Oscar, other than give him pain meds. I'm not so sure I want to expose him to an emergency clinic anyway, since he hasn't yet had his 2nd set of shots. Does anyone know of a safe pain reliever that can help Oscar out until tomorrow, or should we risk an emergency vet visit?
Thanks

I'm sorry I don't have any answers. I just am here to say how sad I am that you and Oscar are going through this. I hope someone can give you great advice on pain meds for your sweet little boy.

The only thing I can think of using because oscar is so young is an orajel product. They have a baby product. That will work to soothe but could also make him think it doesnt hurt so i can go crazy chewing on things and injure the raw area more so keep him calm and relaxed. make sure it does not get on his tongue as well because the last thing you need is him bitting down on that. All the other stuff I can think of is for over 6 months and based on 50 lbs. I hope this helps and gets him to sleep tonight.
Thanks for your suggestions and concern. I continued to search the local area and found a vet hospital that's open today and has a vet dentist on duty, so we'll be taking Oscar in at 4:30pm. She may or may not be extracting his canines, but at least we'll have someone look at him who knows what they're doing (and has the ability and knowledge to help). I'll report back once I know more. Thanks again.
I can imagine how relieved you must be that you can get your little dood some help today! Whew! Please keep us updated.
oh no..so sorry to hear about Oscar. will he let you put a cold wash cloth in his mouth or possibly freeze a washcloth a bit and let him chew on it. please keep us posted.
Hi everyone,
We're back from the animal hospital and good news... They're keeping Oscar overnight (with pain meds) and will do the canine extractions in the morning. He should be home by tomorrow afternoon. He cried something terrible when they went to take a look at his mouth, but they managed. We could see 2 good-sized holes where the lower canines were digging into the roof of his mouth. He has a serious overbite. Hopefully, getting those teeth out will help his lower jaw to grow correctly and maybe we'll avoid doggie braces for the adult canines that come in. The vet didn't sound overly convincing on that front, however. At least Oscar will be free of pain and he won't have that awful bite in the short term. That's worth something, and plenty good enough for me right now. We all miss him tonight (Lucy included!). Thanks for your concern. Oh, BTW, Oscar was 17-1/2 lbs (at 10-1/2 weeks). Does that sound like a big puppy to you? Lucy was 15.8 lbs at the same age and she weighs about 55 lbs now at 3 yrs old. Sounds like my 40 lbs max doodle will end up more in the 60 lbs range. What do you think?
Thanks so much for the update! Glad to hear Oscar is getting well-cared for tonight and tomorrow. You must be sooo relieved! I hope the extractions go smoothly and Oscar is much improved tomorrow night.
Good to know that he is on pain medication.
Have you discussed this with the breeder? Hopefully they will contribute to the cost.
