Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi, All!  I've never posted before, so I hope this comes out all right.  I was recently at our local mall and stopped in to a USA Dog Shop.  While talking with the proprietor about Bender, (my 90lb labradoodle who thinks he can pull me anywhere he wants while we're out walking), he told me about the Freedom No-Pull Harness (on which they have a patent) and said he was SURE this would work.  Does anyone have any experience with this and is it worth the money ($30 - $40)?  Thanks!

My husband suffered a pretty bad cut across both of his legs that was caused by a retractable leash.  He was walking one of our dogs on a regular leash, and the person with whom he was walking was using a retractable leash on her dog.  The dog ran across and in front of my husband, and the leash cut his legs.  It was the summer time and he was wearing shorts.  The woman threw out her leash after that, in favor of a traditional leash.  Please, everyone, don't even use one at the beach!  Just go out and get an extra long lead.  You can get an inexpensive one at Pet Edge that's 50-feet long.

You can even use a long rope with a slip knot for places where the dog is going to be running free and the line is "just in case."

Sorry if I sound like our beloved Doris....but ya'll have me re-thinking my "beach plan" using the retractable leash.    I can just see it now.....me walking along the water's edge with Banjo, watching the dolphins as they frolick in the water, following along with us....I tend to get into a very spaced out relaxed  state of mind....who knows what could happen.   Another dog coming out of nowhere and getting tangled in Banjo's leash....

Laurie......thanks for your post, I'd feel horrible if in an inattentive moment someone was hurt from a leash of all things.

Back to the yucky, sandy leash!    : )     Banjo won't mind a bit!

:-0. That graphic is frightening.

Charlie has the Freedom no-pull harness. It works just fine- and once you have the hang on putting it on (one lesson), it's two buckles, honestly. I don't have the two clip leash, we just clip his regular leash to the front clip It works as Karen describes- if he pulls, it brings his chest towards whatever is holding the leash.

I've never clipped the leash on the back for more than a minute to see how it felt in the house.

Works for us.

I would also like to add that his car harness goes on in the same manner, so it was a relatively easy transition to get him to sit still for both "applications".

So the way you use it, it's really just like the Easy Walk except twice the price, lol.

I'm pretty sure it was about $20-25. If that means I paid too much, that's fine. I didn't have to run around town looking for a different one and I supported my local lovable pet shop. My time is valuable!

Good info for the OP Donna, because she quoted the price as $30-40, which is what I was going by. If it's 20-25, it's the same as the Easy Walk. And if anyone here is thinking of buying any type of harness, if you order through the DK Amazon link, it saves time and also helps support DK.

So to summarize: either contraption will work. Skip the two clip leash if you have the Freedom No Pull (that's probably what's adding to the price). Go with whatever you have available locally or can order and can buy for $25-ish.

You can buy the Easy Walk at petsmart and petco too I believe, so pretty easy to find.

I don't remember exactly how much it was, but it was definitely over $30 in the shop.  I think I will try the Easy Walk first.  Seems simple and inexpensive enough.  We never use the retractable leashes on the premise that it does promote pulling.  Now I'm using the Kong heavy duly braided nylon leash because in the time it took to speak with the groomer, Bender had eaten through the leather one!
