Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I've been scouring DK trying to find progressive weights on puppies to estimate how big Oscar will ultimately get. So far, I haven't found a puppy that was the same weight as Oscar at his age. I was told by his breeder that he should get no heavier than 40 lbs, but at 11 weeks and 2 days he's a whopping 19.6 lbs! 2 days ago he was 18.6 lbs. At 10-1/2 weeks old Lucy, Oscar's 3 yr old sister, was 15.8 lbs, and she's now 53 lbs. Anyone have a similarly sized puppy as Oscar at about 11 weeks old? If so, how big is your puppy now?
UPDATE:
12 weeks, 1 day: 21.4 lbs. 12 wk pic:
13 weeks (3 months exactly): 23.2 lbs
14 weeks: 25.2 lbs
15 weeks: 27.8 lbs.
16 weeks: 29.4 lbs.
Estimated mature weight: 29.4 lbs. x 2 = 58.8 lbs. + 5-10 lbs = 63.8 - 68.8 lbs
17 weeks: 31.4 lbs.
18 weeks: 33.4 lbs. (I swear, I'm not making this up! Oscar has been gaining EXACTLY 2 lbs. a week for the past 2 weeks... I weigh him on the same digital scale each week, so there's no inconsistency between different scales.)
19 weeks: 34.6 lbs. (Oscar had his neuter procedure this week)
20 weeks: 36.4 lbs.
21 weeks, 1 day: 39.2 lbs.
22 weeks, 1 day (5 mos.): 39.8 lbs.
23 weeks, 1 day (5 mos., 1 week): 43.9 lbs. (weighed on vet's scale)
1 yr old: 55 lbs 1 yr pic:
16 months: 59lbs, 24" tall at withers:
18 mos.: 62.6lbs.
19 mos.: 65 lbs.
22 mos.: 67.8 lbs.
24 mos.: 69 lbs., 25" at the withers. Oscar on his 2nd birthday:

Deb,
Boone DOES seem to have a tendency to look HUGE in his pictures. I like to show them off cause I think they're funny but he really doesn't LOOK that big in real life. At 5 months old he weighs 43.4 lbs. I haven't weighed him for a week now. That's because I have to get my son to hold him and weigh him. He's just gotten too heavy for me to pick up very easily. He is mostly curly around his head. His body, esp. when I brush it out, is more of a wavy, soft hair, and on the back at the base of the tail a bit more wiry. It will be interesting to see what kind of hair he ends up with as an adult. But as far as weight goes, I'm guessing he will end up close to 80 lbs. Oh, and my son that was holding Boone in that pic you asked about is about 5'10".

Finally! The 16 week mark! Now I can make the mature weight calculation! Today Oscar weighed 29.4 lbs. So, according to the calculation rule, Oscar's approximate mature weight will be 63.8 to 68.8 lbs!
29.4 lbs. x 2 = 58.8 lbs. + 5-10 lbs = 63.8 - 68.8 lbs
We are new to Doodlehood and are trying to learn as we go. I have a couple of questions regarding our new little boy. We just got our 16 week old boy two days ago and we are trying to guess just how large he will end up. At 16 weeks...he is about at 40lbs. We know he originally came from a breeder and figure that one of the parents was definitely a Standard size...by his sizing now.
The other question is this....is there a "bratty" stage these pups go through...like I have seen others talking about? If so...at 16 weeks...would he be in it now? The reason I am asking is that 80% of the time, he is calm, loving and quiet. It is the other 20% that we are dealing with. Monty loves to "flip the switch" from a sweet little boy to one that starts puppy biting our clothes and hands, along with humping my leg! No amount of me telling him NO or pushing him away does the trick at this stage. He just keeps coming back for more.
I do plan on getting him in class, but it will be at least three weeks before we start and I really don't want to wait that long to start breaking him of these habits.
Most of the equations double the weight at 16 weeks and then some add 5-10lbs. I think mine will be about double her 16 week weight (26 lbs) and finish up around 50 lbs. You will have a big boy :-). I think my goldendoodle ended up about right as well - he was 30lbs at 16 weeks and now ranges between 68-70lbs.
You are at the tail end of the first bratty stage. The real bratty stage (aka adolescence) starts at 7mos - we have just started that one :-)
No and pushing away don't usually work - you should try giving him a timeout by moving away from him into another room for a couple of minutes. Also, if he bites, yelp like a puppy - it's how the mom and siblings communicate biting too hard (they will cover this in your puppy class but I wouldn't wait for that).
I will try that yelp....while I wait until class starts! :) Thanks!
At our puppy classes, they stressed bite inhibition as the most important thing to teach new puppies. A puppy bite might just be an irritation but an adult bite on kid is dangerous for both the kid and the dog
I agree, Cynthia. I find he really only does it when he is over stimulated. The rest of the time he is a total lover. But, I still am anxious for class to start! :)
Boris is 16 weeks and 32lbs, going to be a big boy too!
Doc was pretty close, 38 lbs at 16 wks. You should join the "heavyweights" group if you haven't already!
As for the behavior. Doc is 20 weeks now. He is pretty bratty! LOL! Same as your dood.. Doc is chill really mellow 80% our main trouble with him though is barking spells. He barks at my 14 yr old when she sits in a certain spot on the couch (his spot of preference!) He barks loudly and it has a little growl to it at times. HIs pupils dilate and he just seems CRAZY! It usually lasts for about 5 mins, Gabby tells him no bark and tries to "ignore" him. He then will nip or just nose at her. Sometimes we can distract him by throwing a ball for him. Maybe he is just wanting to play, or wanting her out of his spot.. We dont know for sure we have tried lots of things to get him to hush. When I told my husband that the "adolescence" phase would begin around 7 mos he said "WHAT STAGE IS THIS THEN?!" LOL!!!
I did not realize there was a "heavy weight" group! Thanks for letting me know. Looks like a group I will definitely need to join...as I feel he will be a heavy weight! :) Well, it is comforting that this bratty stage is something that they all seem to go through, so I don't feel all alone.
When you throw the ball for him when he's demonstrating this behavior...it's actually a reward. The message you're sending is....we approve of what you're doing, so we're going to give you a reward (ball playing). That will be very confusing for him. Nipping or nosing at your daughter because he "wants her out of his spot" is not acceptable behavior and even though he's a puppy I really don't think that's something you want to encourage.
