Has anyone had a puppy with vaginitis? Our vet says that it is sometimes worth delaying spaying until the first heat cycle. I would be grateful for any advise.

I HAVE a pup with vaginitis... At first our vet wasn't going to treat it - she said it will pass after she was 6 months or so, but she wasn't emptying her bladder like she should have been. She was peeing more like a male marking it's territory. (pee a little - wait and pee some more) So the vet did treat her with antibiotics, but it really didn't seem to help the pee and stop thing she does. And like the vet said - the infection will probably come back eventually - and I think it is. She seems to be licking herself more again. I guess we will just have to tough it out and wait until it clears itself up. We have a long ways to go with this - our Abby is only 12 1/2 weeks old.
As far as spaying goes, my vet still says that between 5 and 6 months is the time to spay. She said that bigger breed dogs usually are older coming into their first heat.
I hope this info helps some...
My puppy had vaginitis also. Our vet said the same thing, just wait it out. They are willing to give me antibiotics but they said it probably wouldn't help. I haven't asked about delaying spaying and he didn't bring it up. He just said it's not uncommon.

Have you told Shawna? She was wondering if it was something she gave our puppy before she came home. You might want to let her know just for her reference. She might find a pattern.

Good luck!
Thanks for replying. I hope it sorts itself out soon as she's licking a lot and going to the bathroom more frequently.I don't really want to delay spaying umless I have to.
How are things going for you with the puppy. I am amazed at how easy ours has been to train.
She's great! And yes so easy to train. Started sleeping through the night by the 3rd night. She learned sit and down in 48 hours. Potty trained in 6 days and now she knows "high five" and come. Daisy is so mellow and lovable. Hardly whines, unless she needs something, doesn't bark, and is perfectly content playing by herself in the backyard. She's only nippy when she first wakes up then after a while she's just lickey and playful. I just couldn't be happier with her. My DH who was impartial to this whole puppy thing and not a real dog person just loves her. He goes home from work 2-3 times a day just to see how she is and play with her for a bit so she doesn't get lonely.

How much does your puppy weight now? I'd love to see more pictures, you should post some on your page.
Make sure you keep the hair trimmed on their little bottoms. Sometimes, when the hair there gets long (and the little pups squat so low) it can almost act like a little wick from the ground up. When we brought our Chloe home she had one vaginitis infection (in addition to coccidia) which we cleared up with Clavamox and then it came right back. Our vet was all ready to do all kinds of expensive dye tests and ultrasounds (to the tune of $1000) until I said Whoa... so we ended up keeping her on a course of antibiotics for 30 days. At the same time, I had my guardian home start adding some yogurt to her food and she never got another one. Good luck!
My puppy is 7 months old and has had vaginitis since I got her at 8 weeks. The vaginitis got really bad after she got spayed. The vet techs had shaved her and she became even more irritated. I had been regularly using baby wipes to clean her after she peed. Female puppies have a tendency to squat so low that they touch the ground and that causes them to get the bacteria. A week after the spay, she started having accidents in the house after having been potty trained for a few months. The vet felt it was due to the vaginitis. Vaginitis can cause them to feel irritated and feel the need to urinate. My vet put her on Clovomax. The medication only temporarily helped the problem. A friend who has had dogs in the past with the same issue told me to clean her with white distilled vinegar and warm water. She will also put neosporin around that area at night when her dog is sleepy and not likely to lick herself. She said it took care of the problem within a day. I also still use the baby wipes after she pees in hopes of staying on top of the problem. My vet said that she will outgrow it. I just recently bought cranberry tablets from a company called B-Naturals. It is supposed to help with kidney and bladder problems. I figured it wouldn't hurt to try it out. Hope this information helps!
Has any of the puppies had their urine tests come back with Struvite crystals? Charli has had mucous hanging on her rear that the vet tells me is from the bladder infection. Hmph! Now I am beginning to think it is puppy vaginitis after reading these posts.
Please share the signs and smyptoms you have with your puppies. I think it is time I diagnosis Charli and let the Vet in on what's really wrong!!
THANK YOU!
Hello, I just wrote a long story about my puppies vaginitis issues. I didn't read that you should wait for the first heat cycle until AFTER I got Abigail spayed. I guess they usually outgrow it and it is normal for puppies. I try to keep her clean with baby wipes and I am currently giving her cranberry tablets. I am not sure if I would have waited for the first heat cycle myself. I think there are risks with other issues. Good luck in deciding!
I think that using over the counter products for womens yeast infections as well as using the baby wipes helps.
