We get our puppy in Jan. so I have been reading and researching in preparation for the big day.
I have read with interest the widely lauded Bully sticks for chew toys. So I looked up bully sticks. Lol, I had no idea they were made from the p****s of a bull, I'm not quite sure how I feel about that. You never know what you might learn on Doodle Kisses, some of it might be TMI lol

Well, I found and purchased some bully sticks odor free lol. How old before Auggie can have them ? Is 10 weeks too young ? I also bought antlers. We get Auggie in 2 weeks. Woo Hoo
My puppy is about 10 weeks old. If not Bully sticks then what else would be good for them to chew on if anything? Is it too young to introduce them to Bully sticks or antlers? Thanks for any help..
You might want to avoid chews for another few weeks. When you do start to allow them, supervise directly, and make sure they aren't breaking off big pieces and swallowing (causes vomiting!) or aren't consuming the entire thing in an hour or even a day or two. You might need to limit chewing time as well.
In the meantime, consider a puzzle toy for food, one of the balls that rolls around and treats fall out work the best at that age- and they do pick up on it quickly. I only had to show Charlie one once and he's been nose and paw on the ball ever since.
This is my favorite- it takes him a bit longer to get the treats out, but it's easy to fill, and isn't noisy like a Bob-A-Lot.
Julie, thank you so much for the advice, it makes sence. I have to admitt that I have been concerned about a small puppy and what he gets to chew on, even the antlers look dangerous to me, they seem small and pointy . I will be watching him like a hawk when he is chewing. I did get some chews from Kong that you put treats inside, I will try those first because I already have them but I think I will order the ball as well, maybe the next size up from the smaller chews I have now.
Thank you so much. I have learned sooo much from this site, it is proving to be invaluable.
Great advice, thanks so much!
Yes, what bully sticks are was a surprise to me as well! Lucy loves them (as does Oscar), but after Oscar had a chipped tooth and had to have it extracted (both his lower canines were extracted, actually, due to a malocclusion) we were told to refrain from giving anything that doesn't pass the fingernail test (a fingernail should leave an impression in the chew toy). Bully sticks didn't pass, nor did sweet potato chews. Such a shame, as Oscar is CRAZY for both. He has a month or so before he gets his big boy teeth, AND his bully sticks and sweet potato chews!
My vet told me use the same test - so no raw bones, antlers, nylabones or yak cheese sticks either. My older GD chipped a molar on raw beef bones.
Its funny how the chew toy they really want is the one they can't have. Lucy (3 yrs old) prefers Oscar's softer chew toys (so she can destroy them!), and Oscar prefers Lucy's harder ones (antlers, bully sticks, Sam's Yams). Its a zoo around here trying to make sure they each have their own appropriate toys!
Our breeder said not to start them too early as they are pretty rich. What age did you start the bully sticks?
Thank you, that helps to know when they are age appropriate. Auggie is only 11 weeks so we have a while.
