Oliver will bark at anything, like Archie. If he is barking at neighbor dogs, it may be territorial, if its a squirrel, well, call him inside. My grandma has two Yorkie dogs that bark too, so she got one of those things that makes a high pitch noise when they bark. if that doesn't work, then try being more stern. it is really hard, and if that doesn't work, then you might need to call a professional.
Has he been to the vet? Something may be bothering him. Or perhaps he has "found" his voice. He is a baby and maybe saying "I need someone to comfort me, I'm hungry, I need to go out, etc" He is away from his mommy and littermates for the first time.
Is he barking at you? In his crate? Out the window? What's he barking at?
What do you do when he starts barking at you? What have you done so far?
I would ask the same questions as Adina--if the pup is just trying to get your attention, the barking will stop when it gets no results--ignore it! It will take a while, but it will work--also, teaching your dog the commands for "bark" and then "quiet" is useful according to some other discussions we have had here--I have not tried that but I hear it works.
With a new puppy...here's what I'd do....
-Completely ignore him when he barks at you. He wants your attention and that's why he's doing it.
-I'd turn away from him and wait. The second he stops, turn back and say "good quiet" and treat. This means for a while you'll need to carry treats with you all the time. And you need to do it consistently. This sends a message that being quiet will get your attention and that's when he'll be rewarded. It starts to associate the word "quiet" with not barking. You can build on that later.
-Never yell at him or verbally correct for the barking at this stage. He won't understand and will just view it as giving attention back to him.
Good advice!
I'm having the same problem with my 10 week old f1b. He was super sweet and quiet the first few days but now he's only quiet if he's sleeping. The barking is becoming a big problem with my neighbors as I live in DC in a rowhouse. I've read lots of different books and have been ignoring the barking/rewarding when he's quiet for over a week and nothing has changed. I'm curious if you found anything that worked since you posted this?
