Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Lizzie, our 9-month old goldendoodle, was out in her first snow yesterday. She loved it but came back in the house with balls of ice & snow stuck in her paws. I tried melting the ice with a hair dryer, but she hated the noise and wouldn't stay still. Anyone have suggestions for how to keep the ice and snow from sticking to her paws or how to melt it?

I tried the suggestion of Pam Spray but Willson didn't like it so I take a warm wash cloth to clean his paws, and I also let him drip dry on a towel for a tiny bit while i get the cloth ready , from another suggestion I read about I keep him on his leash stuck to a door knob so he doesn't wander all over, He likes to eat the ice balls so once I get a few off I give to him to eat. Hope this helps
Thanks for the suggestion. I assume you put the Pam Spray on before he went out. Did he slip on the ice with it on?
Thanks for the suggestion. I figured others were having the same problem. I did check the Forum & found a few suggestions. We used to have a labrador retriever who had problems with his paws in the snow (they would bleed) & we used booties with him. He didn't like them & used to slide on the ice. (We also tried socks tied around his paws.) We'll try the warm water the next time it snows. Abby, our labradoodle, is flat-coated & doesn't have the same problem.
I just let my doodles thaw in the kitchen..seems to work out fine.
I'm with Adina. Our dogs just thaw on their own with no problems.
This is our first winter with Ari (and our first experience with ice/snow in the paws). It really doesn't seem to bother Ari, but I would imagine it to be cold on him, so when he comes in I have a cloth that I dampened with warm water and I wipe out the bottom of his paws. Usually a ball of ice/snow comes out of each paw and like Sue said, Ari eats it too...lol.
We take her right to the shower. She knows when I bring her in the door off our master bedroom she is to go right in the shower:)
Thanks for all your suggestions. We are expecting 3 - 5" or more of snow tomorrow so we will have a chance to try them out!
Chapin comes in through the laundry room, so I tie his leash to the door, put a towel into the dryer for a few minutes while I take off my coat, hat, gloves, snow pants, scarf, long underwear, etc... LOL. Then, the towel is warm, and I wipe him down and do his feet.

When he goes for grooming next week, I'm going to have them cut that hair short short short around his paws!

Environment Canada says this weekend will be SNOWMAGEDDON where I am, so this should be fun!!!
I have to say I LOVE THE SEARCH FEATURE!!!! I know this is an old thread but Gaston-Cramer just came in from experiencing his first snow. YES IT IS SNOWING IN THE PIEDMONT OF NORTH CAROLINA!!!!!! It's been snowing for only about 2 1/2 hours and we have well over 4" of snow on the ground! Most of it on Gaston-Cramer's coat! LOL All the other dogs came into the garage and were able to shake the snow right off. Poor GC is matted down with snow. Mind you, he could care less and had an absolute blast! Using the search feature I was able to get your tips! Thank you all! I'm going to try the Pam spray tomorrow as I'm certain he's going to be doing some doodle slidin' in the snow once sun comes up! LOL
I wipe their paws off in the garage and then they just melt inside. Today I put a blanket down for them to lay on - they de-ice themselves :)
Actually Max eats the ice/snow off his paws when he comes in....its like a treat for him since he also likes to eat ice cubes!
