Hi :)

My 6 month old pup Reggie was just neutered a week ago. The surgery went well- he was in good spirits the next day, didn't try to lick at all, and stayed pretty chill for the first few days. The ouchie spot looks like it is healing well. He is eating and drinking well. BUT, since we got him back, he's been peeing all over the place?

Before neutering, he would poke us with his nose and whine, then sit by the door when he had to go potty. We are operating under "better safe than sorry" so even if we don't see signs, we take him out every couple of hours just to make sure we don't have accidents. He's gotten so good, we only crate him at night... except when he snuggles with us in bed :)  I'm able to hang out with him while I work, so he's almost always supervised. Pretty much the only accidents we would have would be right away in the morning, if we'd let him out of the crate while we were getting shoes on, etc. He was such a good boy!

Now, however, his potty habits are totally different :( When we take him out, he only pees a little bit. Sometimes he'll pee a bit here and there, like he is marking? Then we come back in, and he'll have an accident on the floor 15 mins later? And it's not a big pool of pee, it's like little drips all over the floor. Random spots, never really the same place twice. When he does indicate he has to potty, he'll have an accident while we are putting the leash on!? Sometimes he pees WHILE he's walking???? Outside and inside!  So of course he's pretty much covered in pee, and smells horrible, but I'm afraid to bath him because 1) I want the wound to heal and 2) I don't want to dry his skin out by bathing him all of the time!

I'm so bummed! We had close to 10, yup 10 accidents today before I decided I just had to crate him.

Do you think it's something like a bladder infection? Can that happen after neutering? Or is it hard for them to hold it after surgery? Or do pups just sometimes forget how to be potty trained?

I already emailed the vet, but any other advise would be very much appreciated!

Thanks much!

My 7 year old is like this.  He has a lot of pee to get out and sometimes he gets tired of standing in one spot or excited about something and walks and he's still peeing.  Also at times, if I let him out and I think he's done (but he's not) and call him back in...I'll know he wasn't really done because he'll dribble all the way into the house.  It's really annoying.  So I often leave him out for several minutes so that I can be SURE he's done when he comes in.  May or may not be the same thing with your pup.  He might get distracted easily and forget to completely empty...?  I really don't know what it is.  When we were having house breaking problems (and even later) I got his urine checked and there was never anything wrong with it.

"sometimes he gets tired of standing in one spot"  hahahaha Adina.

perhaps a newspaper to read?

Boris was neutered three weeks ago and he has had no issues regarding peeing since. I have not noticed any change in his habits and therefore I think there maybe some medical problem in Reggie's case. I would wait for a reply from your vet and insist in some follow up investigation if necessary. It maybe a UTI, alternatively he may just be uncomfortable following the surgery and this may be upsetting him.

I know that female dogs can sometimes have problems with leaking, but don't know if that is also an issue with males.  I'll be interested to see what your vet says.  Be sure to keep us posted.

I've only had male dogs all of which were neutered between 6-10 months and none of them had this problem.  It's good that you are checking with your vet.  I hope it is nothing serious and gets better soon!

Until his wound heals you could clean him up with a good quality waterless shampoo.

We have three males under two years old.  We had this happen with the last two (about 3-4 days after) but it was only a time or two.  Sully decided my living room was the new "outside" and I had to block him from the room.  Beau decided to pee in the foyer in front of the door and then poop in the dining room.  I had to "catch" both of them in the act and it never happened again.  I googled this at the time and there are a lot of posts out there.  Some say it's the dog "getting back" at us for the surgery but I personally find that more than a little hard to believe.  The other was there can be some slight swelling from the surgery that makes it harder to pee all the way.  I have no idea the cause but the later seems to make more sense at least to me.  On the bright side, once we caught them in the act it never happened again.  Hang in there.

lol...that had to be a guy that came up with the "getting back at you for neutering" theory.  ha

;)

Hi guys,

Well, I talked to the vet and explained things, and she said it sounded like a UTI and to get a urine sample and bring him in. I thought "easy fix!". However, the test results show he doesn't have any kind of infection, and she said the wound is healing great and everything looks good down there. She said sometimes pups regress like this, so we'll just have to re-train him. Bummer. Stinker.

I do enjoy the vendetta theory, and I think I'll stick to that story instead of "he forgot how to be potty trained" :) Adina, I think you might be onto something with the distracted while peeing thing. We live downtown where there are lots of cars, people, other dogs passing by constantly, so maybe it would help to take him to a quieter spot to pee? And bring him a magazine? ;)

Thanks for your advice, everyone!

well, i did a 4 mo old female yesterday..why so early many reasons..one being the breeder usually does before they leave her..so, i saw no reason to doubt the timing. Also we are traveling back up north and this doc does the laser surgery and i found none by me in chicago burbs that do..so yesterday she was reluctant to pee but finally came around. She ate one meal came home a little before dinner..but NO poop...so we will see..it almost seemed to me she was a little afraid..or am i putting human actions onto a canine..who knows..time will take care of things im sure./not?!!

When we had Roxy fixed last month she had a few accidents the first 2 - 3 weeks.  I've read this is normal after 1st being fixed.  I was so disappointed after how well she was doing with potty training - she hadn't had an accident in months.  Thankfully it did stop so don't lose hope.
