I always have my dogs microchipped since two ran away from our house on the 4th of July (neighbor putting of fireworks) while we were at the fireworks show in Monterey. They were missing for two days and finally a boy called us that the elder dog had come up to his house asking for food but they couldn't get the other dog. The one that came to them had his collar on with identification but the other dog has lost his collar. They were both microchipped immediately and all dogs since then have been microchipped as puppies before we even get them. Oh, and there is one microchip organization what wants to change a yearly fee for registration. Just say no. A one-time registration is enough. All vets and shelters have scanners for microchips.
Libby is chipped also and we do not keep a collar on her at home! I feel extra safe that she has the chip and did not even realize that some cause cancer!
My puppy has a microchip and I have no regrets. I kind of wish I could microchip my kids. LOL. It just gives me more peace of mind if he were to go missing.
I have thought about this exact same thing. That is a whole different topic for discussion but if I was given the option to have my daughter microchipped when she was born I absolutely would have... now I also would have opted to have it actually be a GPS too just in case of a kidnapping situation. If someone kidnapped a child there wouldn't be an opportunity to present itself to have their microchip scanned but a GPS on the other hand...
Good point about the GPS. I like that idea! :)
Mine are microchipped. I have never even heard any links to cancer from microchipping. I'm going to have to go look that up. I do feel like if there was a lot of solid evidence that it was something to worry about that it would be a featured discussion somewhere on DK (like the puppy stuff is in puppy madness and the recommended brands list is on the food group).
If it's not on DK it can't be real, can it? (kidding of course... just making a joke on how much I just realized I've started to rely on DK haha)
This has been discussed before:

I'm sure there are other discussions about this subject.
Boomer and Shayna are chipped. We have not had Mariner chipped, as we do not know if it will have any effect on his seizure disorder.
Mickey was micro chipped when we picked him up. I registered him as soon as we go home. My breeder got a call from a shelter who had picked up one of her dogs 9 years later. The new owners never registered the chip in their name. Our breeder went and picked up the dog and found it a good home. So it does happen.
