Just an fyi, my 8 month GD, lucas ate a package of vitamin c drops with Xylitol. he is now in the emergency hospital for two days getting his liver flushed out and being watched for seizures, liver damage (GF failure) and hypoglycemia. this is something to be careful of, the bill is up to 2 grand.Thank goodness I found this site and got insurance! He is not out of the woods, they have to check his liver levels every three hours, I hope and pray he will be ok...please keep your pups away from sugar free candy!

So sorry. Hope Lucas is soon out of the woods. You must be so worried.
Thank you Susan, I have heard from the doctor this morning and he said that Lucas' blood levels look stable, they will keep him for another 24 hours. Yes it is very upsetting to me and my family. Who would think that "candy" could be deadly?

I'm so happy Lucas is doing better!  Yes, Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs.  A good friend of mine found that out the hard way too.  (in her case it was a pack of gum that she had purchased at Whole Foods)

Oh Cheryl! How frightening! Hoping and praying Lucas continues to improve to full health.
Hope he is better and at home soon!
Wishing Lucas a speedy recovery. When I first leaned of Xylitol I checked everything in my house.... And check everything I bring in. Hope the docs can stay ahead of this. Please do keep us updated.
Thanks for the info! Happy that you discovered what he got into! Thoughts and prayers for both of you!
Thank you all for your kind words, it is a very scary time. You have a perfectly healthy puppy and would never expect that something so trivial could be so deadly! I almost did not even call the vet! You can be sure that no Xylitol will ever come into this house again!

Cheryl, how scary and praying for Lucas and a full recovery!  These little Doodles just love to "test" everything.

here is hoping for a quick recovery. Make sure you save every bill or paper the vets give you for when you submit to the insurance. they want everything even the little notes nurses and dr's put on the pets charts.

So sorry you and your pup have to go through this. Thanks for the info-I never would have thought it could be so serious! Glad Lucas is recovering.

I'm so sorry Cheryl! How terribly awful and scary for Lucas, you, and your family! I'm glad to  hear Lucas is getting better now. Thanks for the warning too. Its important everyone know the severe danger artificial sweeteners have on dogs.
