Why don't you ask at your vet's office if they will do it for you and show you how it is done? It can be tricky and if you are not comfortable doing it you probably should let the pros do it. Good luck!
The quick will retreat if you cut them regularly. 12 weeks is an awfully long time to go without clipping. You can just take off a little frequently until you get them under control. Some people use a grinding dremel. I found that hard to do alone. But be careful if you do use it to let it cool after doing a few nails, it can get very hot.
I agree that you should go to the vet a few times and that will help get the quick shorter--you can also buy a powder to stop the bleeding and if it has another ingredient to stop pain, that helps a lot. I use one I ordered from Petedge. com, but lots of places have it. It works quickly to end the discomfort--but if you can avoid making them too short, that would be better.
thanks everyone. i ended up taking him to a grooming place and they did it under 1 minute. how often do they typically need to be cut? that was so easy, i almost just want to always leave it to the professionals, but paying $14 for less than a minute is a lot!
my vet charges $15. i need to explore some other places. thanks!
Sometimes I clip Darwin's nails, and sometimes I take him into the groomer. Our groomer charges $5 and will do it right there in the front of the shop, it takes about 2 minutes.
It does have it's perks. :-)
I just paid $26 to have Trav's nails trimmed at the vet's office! Sheeeeesh!
Oh wow, that is crazy!
