Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Ok I've decided to start this thread because there are a lot of issues we will need to address with help Jake adjust to a new life. I'm just going to post here with questions. I've got obedience stuff down I can handle that. But there is alot of other stuff. I'll just post here any maybe one of you wise doodle lovers can help. I can try to post in food, and grooming but so any things are interrelated so I'm going to use this thread as a catch all and if mods want me to separate I can. :)

Issue first and foremost, the diet. We feed one of the foods recommended on here. Jakes current diet (what the owners been feeding him) is dry purina puppy food, and equal parts peas, corn, rice, cooked ground beef and water all mixed together. Okayyyyyyyyy. Iknow how to move a dog from 1 food to another slowly but how in the world do i handle this? Poor Jake has terrible runs! I'm taking him to the vet early this week to check for uti, stool, blood work etc. but how do I begin the transition to my food with all these other ingredients?

Thanks,I'll tackle other issues as we go along. I fear grooming wise he will need a shave. His belly, ears, and legs are horribly matted.

Thanks everyone.

I'm glad Laurie mentioned Hurley. Many on DK contributed to his surgeries through Doodle Messenger. I can't link anything now but if Jake needs help beyond what you can do people on DK can help you figure it out. Thank you for taking this poor boy into your home.

As I said on the other thread, I'm late to the party.  But I was just going to post the same thing.  I would be happy to contribute to take some of the burden off of you and and your family.  You have already done so much for him!

He is stunning and I bet he feels so much better with the haircut! You both look great!

Jen....Jake is gorgeous!!  I love how happy you both look!

OMD, he's beautiful, inside and out!

Jenn, I have Healthy Paws pet insurance for FInn.  I just rechecked the policy. It does not cover pre-existing conditions - a condition that was treated previously, regardless of whether there was a diagnosis - but there is only a 15 day wait period for new conditions.  Hip Dysplasia is a 12 month waiting period. I like it because it pays 90% of all charges, not just 90% of a reasonable and customary fee for service.  Does not cover regular check-ups /annual visits.  Just fyi.

Maybe through Doodle Messenger we could help with the foxtail surgery.

I will help with doodle Messenger whatever I can..... which isn't much but if we all give a little it add's up fast.

With the Doodle Messenger, the treating vet has to agree to participate by accepting donations toward the dog's expenses. Many vets cannot or will not do this. There is also a significant amount of time required to get it all set up, which doesn't lend itself to sitautions where a dog must be treated NOW.

However, I have no doubt that we DKers will help out with the expenses one way or another. :)

Jenn, I am so happy to know that Jake is now safe with you. He looks so soft and velvety after his grooming. It's a wonderful thing you have done and no matter if he stays with you or finds another great home his life has only changed for the better. If the cost becomes too much for you the Doodle Messenger is a possible option. We've been know to step up and help before. :>)

He looks great! Love him white patch too. Sorry for fox tails though. Surprised he's not licking them like crazy. Keep us updated .
He is licking. I thought it was food allergies. You all are great. Thanks for the support. Your kind words make me feel like we can do this. :)
Guess what! I put down water this morning both dogs drank and then jake stopped! So I put water dishes in each of their stands half full. Jake drank some and left the rest. Great progress. I know everyday might not be like this. Ok so jake is peeing in his crate. I suspect he did at old owners house too. I think either uti or this is conditioned behavior because he was forced in there for so long. I know because he smells like urine this morning and he smelled so good yesterday. One hurtle at a time. Jake has a lot more energy today. Brisby who is typically mild mannered is exerting his dominance over jake (mounting). I figure we eill see this as they get adjusted. Let the dominance games begin. I need a recommendation for good quality take along small training treats. Thank you.
