My breeder's contract says by 5 months it must be done, but she recommended waiting until about 5 months so he could get the hormones that help his bone development.

My husband thinks he was humping the other day though when playing with a toy (I don't think he was) but it got me thinking - would neutering sooner avoid some of that behavior?

What are your thoughts? Also, I know it's easier on them when younger. TIA

we got briggs neutered right before he was 6 months old. please note that humping at a young age is mostly not a sexual thing. http://dogcare.dailypuppy.com/mean-puppy-humps-2896.html

since the neuter, he still will mount and hump his bed, and other dogs when playing, but not people. i think neutering by 8 months is the best thing to get them to calm down and maybe reduce the humping, but it won't stop them, as it is an instinct.

6 months is what my breeder recommended. Gabby is 7 months and having her surgery tomorrow :)

Yogi is 5 1/2 months. Being neutered this Friday. The info is so conflicting out there, so waited close to 6 months, not wanting to do it too early(for bone development)

Ask 10 people and you are apt to get 10 different answers.  Our Vet recommended between 5 and 6 months.  After 6 months, the fee actually went up! Enz was done at 5 1/2 months.

Holmes got neutered around 5 mos. also because that's what our vet recommended. He only humps his blanket now, thankfully not people.

6 months. The research I read said waiting until 6 months gave them a chance to have their little personalities form. I know humping is not a sexual thing...but just before he was neutered Sawyer started doing that a lot. After his neuter he stopped. (Took about 2 weeks, once he was completely healed). It probably was a coincidence, but he never humps now.

how does neutering affect personality?

5-6 months, per our vet. If you wait past 6, you run the risk of a female getting her period.

Charlie got neurtered at 5 1/2 months.  He still humps after he got fixed since it's more a behavioral thing.  He only humps this one bulldog stuff toy and nothing else though.

My vet had me wait till Bear was 5 1/2 months because she wanted to wait until his adult teeth came in.  That way she could pull any remaining puppy teeth that were not going to fall out on their own.  Bear still humps me whenever he gets a chance. Actually he would to anyone if given the opportunity. My dad always sticks his leg out when he comes over.  I try to tell him he's not helping the problem but he thinks its hysterical.
