Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi everyone,

We picked out our puppy yesterday and I wanted t to introduce him here. His name is Baxter Black aka "Baxter" or "Bax". He is just over five weeks old now and will be coming home with us in about three weeks and we're super excited.

The breeders think he will have a beautiful shiny, wavy fleecy coat like his mom. He's cute as a button and warmed right up to my husband, stepson and me. I inserted photos of him taken by Focal Clarity Photography at about 3.5 and 4.5 weeks. The breeders' daughter is the photographer, so we've gotten several nice photos. Wondering what he'll grow up to look like and looking forward to his arrival.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE his rich black color!

Thank you. His coat does look shiny - although I'm sure he will have fun playing and sullying it up! Your dogs are precious! I love their coloring.

He is just precious! :D Congratulations!

Thank you, Darlene. Bentley is lovely, too! Love his parti coloring.

Sweet! Love the shiny coat. My breeder told us Oscar would be no more than 40lbs fully grown and now at 1-1/2 yrs he's over 63lbs! Hopefully, your breeder is better at 'guesstimating'.

Wow, Debb, big difference between 40 and 63 lbs! The parents are 19" and 22" at the shoulder. The grandparents size varies from 19" to 23" I think. I tend to think, based on Baxter's sizing now, that he won't be beyond 45 pounds. We do like Baxter's shiny coat - although I have a feeling it will be some work to keep it looking clean and bright!

Oscar was the smallest male of his litter (out of 9 pups total). You can't always go by the size of puppy, as some just grow at different rates. Oscar had huge paws even as a little puppy, though. After being weighed at his first vet visit at 8 weeks something just didn't seem right. He weighed more than his older sis, Lucy, at the same age, who was 55lbs fully grown. So we knew pretty much early on that we'd have a doodle much bigger than 40lbs. Its been fun watching him grow... and grow. He's such a gentle giant.

Very interesting, Debb. Doodles are definitely full of surprises. I've read a number of stories of owners whose dogs were either much smaller or bigger than they expected. Given Baxter's roots, I don't think he'll be much below 40 pounds. I actually would not mind it if he is bigger than expected.

Are Lucy and Oscar siblings or related? Very cute pair.

Thanks. Yes, they're related. Lucy is Oscar's half aunt and is 3 yrs older.

I think in Oscar's case he was just a genetic anomaly. Both of his parents were under 55lbs (mother was more like 45lbs). I do think in most instances the young puppy size correlates with an approximate adult size.

We originally had wanted a medium size doodle because Lucy loved/loves smaller white dogs. As it turned out she adored Oscar's small puppy size and fell immediately in love. I'm not sure she realizes he's so much bigger than her, except perhaps when he tries humping her and gets a death grip on her hips that she simply cannot get out of...lol. They each exhibit dominate behavior back and forth during play.

I am looking for other doodle owners in Portland area to arrange doggie dates with. Maybe we and the dogs can meet up when Baxter is big enough.

That would be wonderful! I hadn't realized you were from the Portland area. Let's revisit this idea when Baxter is older.

Debb. Excellent! Looking forward to it. Where did you but the CD I read about in your profile? I would like to get a copy for Baxter...
