I usually shorten the tail feathers a bit with each grooming to keep the tail in proportion with the coat length. The shortest I have ever cut a tail is about 5 inches on a standard size dog. (except for the lion cut I recently did)
I scissor the tai by holding it out straight and taking small cuts at about a 45 degree angle all the way down the tail so that it doesn't look to structured. I trim the end of the tail shorter as well.
I like long flowing tails, but if they get too long and the body is short, then I think it is a bit out of proportion.
I like Polly's tail long. Her first coat cut is about 7/8" so she looks shaggy, we left her face long (I trim between her eyes and her eyebrows) and her tail long. We love the look we ended up with.
I leave Tara's tail longer. Her coat is wavy/curly mixed but her tail is very straight. Right now her coat is about 1 inch long and her tail is 3-4 inches (she's a mini too) I also leave her face longer. I think it is the most common doodle cut but some people like other cuts so you can always experiment. :)
