2 years ago today one of my best friends was born. Yes, one of my besties is a canine and I don't care who knows it. Brisby was brought into our family to help my son but ended up helping so many other people too.

When we got him, Brisby was a bit timid. I knew if he was to be able to go places with my kiddo, he would need confidence in new situations and people. Starting the second week in our home I began taking Brisby to Lowes on almost a daily basis. He was pretty afraid at first but thanks to patience, yummy treats and all the workers at our local store dispensing them he began to enjoy going places and meeting new friends. He became ok with forklifts, big trucks and loud lumber. I started taking him to my child's school, first on the weekends with no kids. I had him learn how to navigate ramps, metal stairs with openings between them and certain doors. After his confidence grew, and he matured and had some obedience under his belt, I began taking him to my son's small special needs preschool class. He sat with the kids. One little girl was having a hard day and crying and he just laid down beside her. He became a class favorite going with my son every other day with my supervision. After my daughter finished chemo he began going weekly to a pediatric survivors clinic while she was in her therapy group. it made her able to share along with some of the other kids.

2 years later, my son is now in regular 1st grade and doesn't need Brisby beside him to cope and my daughter is done with counseling.  Brisby still comes with me to pick the kids up. He is a favorite among the kids at the elementary school. I am so proud of the way he happily and without fear greets people as hundreds of kids come flooding out from the school when the bell rings.

Brisby isn't perfect. He still plays with overenthusiasm. He will try to knock you down when you enter our house. He barks at the doorbell like his life depends on it. We are working on these things. But what I love about him is that when he sees a human in pain, he instinctively knows to comfort. For this, I am so grateful and thankful that he is in our family.

Happy birthday big guy!
