Lucy just turned one. Monday she started vomiting and would not eat or drink. We took her right into the vet, who did an x-ray and saw nothing. We thought we'd give her a little time and she was just getting worse so we took her to a different vet and he actually felt something in her - a blockage.
They recommended surgery so she had it right away. The best thing that could have happened was that they'd go in, remove the blockage, and close her back up. The worst was what actually happened. They had to take a foot and a half from her intestine - it had necrotized. It was black when it should have been pink.
Her recovery will be hard. Her biggest danger is going septic - I guess it could break open inside of her.
Turns out she had eaten a sock.
This is just such a sudden shock to us!!
Has anyone else been through this?

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, positive thoughts for Lucy. We haven't had this issue with the dogs, but we did have it with one of our cats. He actually had a hairball blocking the passage....this was a few years ago, I can't quite remember if any of the intestine was removed, but he did have the same risks of infection after surgery. It was a slow recovery and he had a fentanyl patch on for the first week, took it off and it was obvious he was having pain so the vet put one back on again. He did recover, but it was hard for him because he was elderly.
I don't understand how the first vet didn't see that on an x-ray and I'd most certainly never go back there.
Fazzy and I are sending the most positive vibes and prayers for Lucy's full recovery. Doodle hugs

Lucy ~ I am so glad you went in for the second opinion. I had a standard poodle that had a blockage right at the stomach opening and we were so lucky to catch it quickly. They removed it via scope. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your little girl and hope she recovers as quick a possible. Please update on her progress.
I am so sorry to learn of this sock issue with Lucy. I feel so badly for her and for you. I hope Lucy recovers fully and quickly from this unfortunate ordeal. Thankfully she had surgery when she did, although it obviously would have been better sooner. I hope recovery goes as smoothly as possible....thinking of you....
Oh, I am so sorry this happened and hope Lucy's recovery is uncomplicated. I always say listen to your gut as to what you should do, you did the right thing to the vet right away and then to another vet. You saved her life.
So sorry to hear this, but so glad you went for that 2nd opinion! Wishing Lucy a healthy recovery, please let us know how she does!
