Lexi had a very upset stomach yesterday. Threw up a little in the morning. We attributed it to AM bile and then fled Boston for my inlaws out of the storm path. After we arrived she started having nasty diarrhea in the afternoon through bedtime. She seemed to be perking up in before bed. Even ate a little. But when we woke up this morning she couldn't walk. She was just lying on the floor like a limp noodle. She's been in the Pet ER here all afternoon for observation. There's a possible obstruction, but the x rays are unclear. It's either gas or something like a rubber band. Separately, they think she injured her leg somehow trying to go to the bathroom in the deep snow. (That's the hypothesis because she couldn't bear any weight on one of her legs, but they don't think it's broken.) We rejected the anti-diarrhea meds, but we have her on pain killers and fluids. Another x-ray in an hour and then they are going to decide whether or not she needs surgery... Argh.

Prayers for Lexi and her people.
Hey everyone, thanks for your good thoughts. Lexi is home with us. On the mend, but not quite better or herself. No obstruction, so no surgery needed, but her stomach is still pretty upset, and she did injure her back leg. Possibly from having to go to the bathroom so often is such deep snow. She's been snick snacking on sweet potatoes and boiled meat this evening and asking for more, so I see this all as a good sign. The emerg vets definitely thought we were insane to turn down the metronidazole, so I hope we don't regret it in two days if she is still sick....
I am so glad that Lexi is home and didn't need surgery. Ned was ill recently with severe vomiting and diarrhea (but no leg issues) so I empathize with how worried you must have been. They did tests and never figured out what was actually wrong either. He was put on both an antibiotic and Flagyl with an anti=nausea shot. He perked up with the shot and began eating without vomiting, but had continued (but less severe) diarrhea until he finished the Flagyl - which isn't the norm.
HI Nancy, I actually called my less conventional vet at home before making the decision on the meds. She definitely gives meds when they are called for. She said that Lexi's stomach is so sensitive that she felt like it was risky to give her meds if the vets didn't think she had a parasite, which they didn't. We are treating with probiotics, slippery elm, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and boiled meat. Her appetite is back for sure, but the diarrhea persists, so it sounds like our pups experienced something similar. So scary. Made me realize that she is really like one of my kids. I was so worried. My husband was, too, seriously - more worried about Lexi than he was when our daughter broke her arm.
Ned is never sick, the others didn't catch it, and though he will get into the trash, he doesn't eat clothes or other things he shouldn't. It is still a puzzle. Our dogs can't tell us what is the matter, while our kids with broken bones can!
Thanks for the update. Such a relief that there was no blockage. I hope she is 100% again soon.
Lexi's the same about not eating clothes or toys. It's been so snowy, and she's been so housebound that the trash is the only thing we can attribute her illness to. It definitely was horribly scary, and she apparently cried the entire time she was in the hospital. 10 hours straight. Poor thing. I have to say, the Slippery Elm tea worked so fast. She is so much better today.
So glad to hear the tea is working and she has improved so much!! Yay! It's heartbreaking to think about her laying there crying for 10 hours straight. Poor baby.
