Puppy Grooming

Hi All - I know this might be a silly question but I'm attaching a picture of Tessy (now 13 weeks) and her hair is practically covering her eyes - it's a wonder she can see! Do you all think it's to the point that I need to get her groomed? I only hesitate because she has not gotten her full set of shots and am worried about taking her to a groomer. But, I don't know if I should wait until she is 16-18 weeks. As always, thanks for your input!

Adorable! I don't blame you for worrying about a Groomer at this stage. Why not buy a pair of rounded tip scissors and trim away? Start slow, maybe have someone hold her for you and snip a little bit at a time. Who knows...you may even decide you can groom her yourself and save a ton of $! Enzo is very use to me trimming her face , as I trim her face ( eyes) every 2 weeks or so. Just this morning I used some thinning shears on her.

Blunt tip scissors - what a great idea! Now I just have to be brave to use them. Maybe I should just do it - it seems that she is so clumsy - I don't know if it is because she really can't see or our slippery hard wood floors or that she is just a puppy. She can go up and down a flight of stairs with ease so maybe it's not so bad but I will try to trim myself anyways.

Tessa is adorable! I bought some scissors that have blunted tips for trimming around the eyes because I know I will need to. It makes me very nervous!
I can't believe how much Tessy has changed since your portrait picture.

She is so cute!  We have waited.  In fact, Lucky is getting his first groom later today.  Yikes!  I wasn't smart enough to think of blunt tipped scissors myself.  :/

A couple snips with thinning shears, and your sweetie pie would be able to see again! :-) The end of thinning shears are naturally blunted and the shears will give a very natural look. You can find an inexpensive brand at Petco. I groom Winnie myself, and have always had to snip those areas more often.

If you get Tessy used to being handled with one hand around her snout and the other handling that hair, it probably won't even phase her when you add a scissor to that hand. Best wishes!

As others have stated, I also bought the blunt tip shears for those first 'around the eyes' trims. Once I got use to using them (which took a good long while) I graduated to regular shears. Then, several years later, with adding Oscar to the family, I started doing full grooms, including clipper cuts. Take it slow, go at your own pace and have patience. Don't be afraid to do just a little at a time if necessary. Puppies can be terribly squirmy until they get use to the process. Getting your puppy accustomed to handling/grooming early goes a long way towards making grooming easier in the years to come. Tessa is a doll, btw!

If you decide to continue grooming her Amazon has a great cordless clippers.  We started clipping Kate because she was so hot all the time.  I think the longest setting is ½ inch which I thought was too short but it was ok.   Good luck.  Susan
