My 1 yr old, Bo, has developed a habit of staring out of my dining room window ...constantly! I work from home so I am with him all day. He gets plenty of play time/exercise between my hubby, me and our two teens.. But due to school and work schedules most of that is in the afternoon and evening. I try to take a few breaks during the day and go outside to play fetch.. While I work he used to lay near my feet and nap a good bit.... Now he has discovered our dining room window..

He either stands, sits and lays by the window just watching. We live in a neighborhood with a big oak tree in a median that's directly in front of our house.. So there are squirrels, birds...maybe a roaming cat to watch. Also many ppl walk so he can see them throughout the day. Not to mention we only have one entrance/exit so every car has to drive right by my house..

Should I look at this as a fun pastime for him? Should it be interpreted as something he enjoys and it's something good to occupy his time while I work? Or could this be a sign of he is sad, lonely, bored during the day and he is longing to go outside? I know thousands of ppl leave for work every day and leave their pets at home to be alone all day.. So I would think Bo is actually is fortunate that I am with him all day.. Even though I can't give him my undivided attention every minute.... At least I'm here and he isn't alone..

I guess it's just that this new habit of his has me wondering if it's a good thing or a sign he isn't happy during the day

This is completely normal and very common. Most dogs will spend their "down time" either sleeping or in front of a window that affords them a good view of the neighborhood activity. I wouldn't give it another thought.

Ours love to sit by any window that has movement outside of it. Even leaves blowing in the wind.  They love watching the squirrels and any wildlife that go by as well as passerby humans. It only becomes a problem when they start barking at anything and lunging at the window. Otherwise, I figure it's just a pastime for them.

Alma's favorite hang out is on our living room couch watching life go by.

Ollie loves to do this. He is very happy to sit and stare and occasionally bark at a dog/cat/squirrel that come too close to our yard.  I don't think he is lonely.

It is a very common pose for us.  We have leather furniture and leather interiors in our cars for this very reason.

I have one that does this too--and he has two other doodles to hang out with as well as my retired husband and me! So, not lonely, not bored, but ON SQUIRREL patrol! :)

Sounds normal to me.  But do remember that these doodles are very active dogs and need lots of exercise and stimulation.  He is at a very active age and would probably love some more activity.  My dogs  (older) actually come up to me or my husband and walk up our body when they want to go outside and do something (not just relieve themselves).Try to get more exercise into everyone's schedule and include your dog.  You all will be healthier and find you enjoy having another excuse to exercise.

Sounds like my doodles. Perhaps it's like us watching TV ;-)

Never thought of that Leslie, but that makes sense to me! I have thought about getting The Dog Channel on Directv, but Murphy would bark at the dogs all day!!

Agree ... animal planet, live TV!

I think it is a great pastime. He is lucky to have a window with lots of activity outside.

Yep, mine too, and they are in and out all day long.
