Jade has a different micro chip implant than the others; which company should I register her with?

Jade was micro-chipped when we got her. Her company is AKC Reunite (which looks like it was formerly AKC CAR) and I have not registered her yet.

Barkley came chipped with Home Again and when Gracie got chipped our vet uses Home Again as well, so I did not have this question then.

I have done a search here on DK regarding chipping. Who knew it could be so controversial? ;)

My question is do I stick with the company she is chipped with or do I register her on Home Again with the others? I've never had a problem with either of the other dogs and once registered, they are in the system - so it says.

However, if the vets in the area only look up one database, then does that mean that if one of my dogs got found and was scanned for a chip - they would only ask one company for info? Or do they do a search through multiple companies (Home Again, AKC Reunite, Avid, etc)?

I believe the scanners at the vets' offices can read any manufacturer's chip, but I'm not sure. I'd ask my vet. I know that I've had fosters with chips from several different companies and my vet's office was able to read all of them.

As far as registering Jade's chip with another company, I'm not sure you can do that. Your best bet is to contact the company and ask them.

It lets you register any microchip number when you register, I just didn't pay for it yet.
I know the scanners will read them as long as they are in the same frequency range. From what I've read I guess there was one company that decided to manufacture them in a different frequency which scanners could not detect. But, due to backlash, they redesigned them.

I was just wondering if they contacted the other companies or if they just contact the one they are familiar with. For example, since our vet does the Home Again chip, then do they only contact home again to get the info? Or do they reach out to other companies?

If we are talking about a lost dog here, I cannot imagine any vet  not contacting whoever they need to contact to get the owner's information and notify them. What else would they do?

So then does the microchip scan also tell the company that it is registered to? I guess I just thought it would read the number.
I will ask my vet the next time we are in.
I should have looked that info up before posting. I didn't realize it also tells them where they are registered.

As per pet Finder:

• A microchip’s sole function is to store a unique ID number that is used to retrieve a pet parent’s contact information—it differs from a Global Positioning System, which is used for tracking, and requires a power source such as a battery.

• When a microchip scanner is passed over the skin of a microchipped pet, the implanted microchip emits an RF (radio frequency) signal. The scanner reads the microchip’s unique ID code. The microchip registry is called, and the registry company uses the ID number to retrieve the pet parent’s contact information from the pet recovery database.

I think you have to register with the company that made the chip--the number would be unique for that company but may be duplicated with another company....so if the wrong company was used, there could be two dogs with the same number.

Ok. Thanks!

Clancy is chipped with Home Again and Ned with Avid.  I also registered Clancy's chip with Avid  when I got him as a rescue.  He is double protected.  The scanner reads the chip.  I have my vet check both boys chips whenever we go in.

Good to know.
